Velgarth Geography

Songlight's Ekele

Heyla, and welcome to your first geography lesson at the Collegium! Herald Jessa at your service. Now, for starters, there are nine nations that are part of this class. Rethwallen, Iftel, Karse, Ceejay, Velvar, Jkatha, Ruvan, Hardorn, and, of course, Valdemar. Maybe someday we'll get a map in here, so I can show you exactly where they are. For now, though, you'll just have to check inside the covers of your Mercedes Lackey books to get a better idea. Now, let's go through the countries, shall we?(Click on any of the countries to hear more details).

Valdemar
We are in the far north-west. On the west we are bordered by the Pelagirs and Lake Evendim. On the north are the Ice Wall Mountains. They are passable through the Crook Back pass, but I can't imagine why anyone would want to go there. It's basically a frozen wasteland. In the north-east, we are on the border of Iftel, and the south-east is bordered by Hardorn. Our southern border is shared by Karse and Rethwallen, with Karse only holding a small portion of the east. The mountain range known as the Comb is on the border of Rethwallen, and traverseable by the White Foal pass or a small, dangerous, goat track. The Terilee river flows through Haven and enters Hardorn in the south.

Rethwallen
Rethwallen is our neighbor to the south. They are bordered on the east by Karse. In the early years of Seleny’s reign, Karse and Rethwallen were at war, and there was a buffer-country in between them called Menmellith. It was a hard, rocky land, and not worth much value. Rethwallen’s capital is Petras. They are bordered on the south by Jkatha and Ruvan. The Anduras River cuts across the south-west corner, but otherwise there are no major rivers. Bolthaven is located in the south of Rethwallen, close to the border of Jkatha.

Iftel
Iftel lies to the north. It is bounded on the east and south by us, and on the west and south by Hardorn. Little is known about Iftel, even now. Although they have opened their borders to us, they are still strangers. All I can say is that much of their land must be barren and frozen, like the area north of the Ice Wall Mountains.

Karse
Karse is south east of us, where the South Trade Road goes through Sensholding. A small portion of the White Foal Pass goes through their north-west corner. They are bordered on the north by us and Hardorn, on the west by Rethwallen, and on the east by Ruvan. The Terilee River runs through the north-east corner, following the border until it finally passes into Hardorn.

Ceejay & Velvar
Ceejay is a country far to the south. Velvar lies to the west, and Ruvan to the north. The Eastern Empire lies(suprise, suprise!) to the east. The northernmost border is parallel to the center of the Dhorisha Plains. The Anduras River cuts across the south-west. Ceejay and Velvar are the southernmost countries taught about in this class.
Velvar is west of Ceejay, and south of Jkatha. Ruvan borders the north-east. The north-west corner is occupied by the Dhorisha Plains. The opposite northern corner is divided by the Anduras River. There are some mountains in Velvar, but none that are really dangerous, and there are no mountain ranges.

Jkatha & Ruvan
Jkatha is directly south of Rethwallen. The Pelagir Hills are in the north-west corner. South of them, on the border is the Pelagir Forest. In the south-west corner is the Dhorish Plains. The south border is along Velvar, and the east is connected to Ruvan. Aside from the Pelagirs, there are no outstanding geographical features in Jkatha. The Anduras River cuts through the western half, going down to the border.
Ruvan is in the middle of many countries. To the north, it borders Hardorn and Karse, Karse in the west, and Hardorn on the east. The eastern border follows the Eastern Empire. A tiny portion of the north-west corner borders Rethwallen. The majority of the western border is along Jkatha, but the south-west corner is by Velvar. South is Ceejay. The Red Stage Lake lies along the Hardorn border. There is a small mountain range in the northern half, but it doesn’t even stretch between the borders. Hawk's Nest is near the western border, nestled into the side of a mountain.

Hardorn
Hardorn is directly west of Valdemar. The southern border in split between Karse and Ruvan, with the Karsite border being significantly smaller. The Eastern Empire composes the entire eastern border, and Iftel holds the north. There are small mountains in the north, but most of the land in the east and south is naturally forest. There are two rivers in Hardorn, the major being the Rogallen River. It goes across the northern half, then dips breifly into Iftel. It comes out again almost direstly north of Ancar’s Crown City, and then cutss straight down, and feeds into the Red Stag Lake. The lake is onthe border fo Ruvan. The minor river is the Terilee. It comes out of Karse, and almost immediately feeds into the lake.
