A young Kerowyn has been in charge of her family’s Keep ever since her mother died two years before. When the ancestral home is attacked by raiders, her father is killed, her brother wounded, and his young bride-to-be carried off. Kero goes after her, and as a result meets her grandmother Kethry, bonds to the ensouled blade Need, and becomes an embarrassment to her brother. She leaves to seek weapon’s training from her grandmother’s she’enedra, Tarma. After three years, she signs on with a top-notch mercenary troop, Lerryn Twoblades’s Skybolts. A skirmish with treacherous Karsites leaves Kero separated from her troop, supplies, and any aid. When she rescues a captured Herald, she learns the meaning of unrequited love. After an irresponsible captain desecrates the Skybolts, Kero is made Captain. Hired by Valdemar to help in their second war with Hardorn, the ‘ Bolts get more than they bargained for. Pursued by a ruthless enemy, with no idea if help will come in time, all they have left is hope . . .
