The Last Herald-Mage Trilogy
Magic’s Pawn
A young Vanyel Ashkevron is exiled to Valdemar’s High Court at Haven and put under the guardianship of his redoubtable aunt, Herald Savil. When he is finally finding happiness, a tragedy occurs. A Herald-trainee is driven mad by the murder of his brother, and vows revenge. Vanyel is caught by choice in his web of vengeance, and is almost killed by a magical backlash. When he awakens, he is Chosen, and Savil is put in charge of a momentous task. The task is to train an uncontrolled boy, who holds enough power to be the greatest Herald-Mage Valdemar has ever seen . . .

Magic’s Promise
Fourteen years later, Vanyel is finally taking a long trip home. After a horrendous year long border guard, Van is off duty at last. A horrific mass-murder is committed across the border in Hijourune, Lineas, and Van is drawn to solve it. As the evidence is mounting against the young prince Tashir, a newly-Chosen Herald, Vanyel discovers a shocking secret. As one terrifying clue after another is revealed, a conspiracy dark with blood is uncovered, a conspiracy that could destroy Valdemar’s entire western border . . .

Magic’s Price
King Randale is dying slowly; inexorably losing his precarious grip on life, tortured with pain at all hours. Valdemar is fraught with danger on all sides, a dying King, an enemy in the South, unstable alliances in all other border-countries. When a young Journeyman Bard is found who can “sing pain away,” Herald-Mage Vanyel is overjoyed. His professional relationship with Bard Stefen soon becomes a close friendship. Later, it develops even further. But Valdemar is running out of time. There is danger in the north. Magical assassins come after Vanyel, and the Guardian Herald-Mages fall, one by one, under mysterious circumstances. Soon, only Vanyel is left. He starts out after the nameless power. But his opponent has more power at his command than Van could ever dream of, and the last Herald-Mage may be asked to pay the ultimate price . . .
*Note: Read the songs at the end of Magic’s Price to hear about some of Van’s adventures during his patrol on the Karsite border. The songs and lyrics are listed on my songs page.
