My Best Friend Mitsui Hisashi

Chapter 2 - Lie

I had to push my way through the crowds in the corridor, to get out to the main entrance. I remember where I went after that, but I still can't believe my cowardness had let me do it (smile).

***Flashback***

'Where shall I go now?' I asked myself. 'Why am I asking this, when I know I have no where to go, except home. Yes, home, I'm being my boring self again.' I went down the main street towards home. I pass the local libary, then stops. I decide I'll go in, 'at least this would break away from my daily routine', I told myself. But come to think of it, I've already broken today's daily routine, going to see that basketball match had been a real big change... and meeting... him. No, no, no, I mustn't think of him any more. Ah, why have I come to the libary, I have no reaserch work to do for school. Oh yes, I wanted to break away from my daily routine, but is this the true reason?

As I thought about it more, I hate myself for not admitting it. 'Why does it take me so long for me to admit something?', I asked myself, 'because you're a coward', another voice in my head said. I walk over to the sports section and look for books on basketball. 'I never knew there were so much books on basketball in the libary.' 'Basketball and America'... 'The History of Basketball'... 'How to make a Basketball'... ah, 'How to play Basketball'. I take that book out of the shelf and flip through it. 'Hum... seems useful', I told myself. I look down on the bottom shelf, there're somemore books on basketball. I take 5 or 6 books from the shelf, which includes 'Basketball Tactics', 'How to become a Basketball player', 'Rules of Basketball' and some other ones which just had 'Basketball' written on the cover, and place them on the table behind me.

I flip through each book to see what's inside. 'A lot of infomation about basketball, and all of them are useful to a beginner like me.' I thought. "Hum... which one shall I take?" I asked myself, "I know, I'll hire all 7 of them."

'Why is my school bag so small? I have to carry 5 of them in my hands now' I told myself, as I went though the automatic doors. Suddenly, something made me look on the other side of the road. I see Mark with two other girls and a boy from our school. But I can't see Nina anywhere. 'I thought Nina said she was going out with mark, why isn't she here now? Has she changed her mind and went home instead? Maybe she just went in one of those shops.'

At last I'm home! My hands are aching. I didn't know 5 books would weigh so much. I can't see my parents' shoes, they must still be at work. I carry the books to my bedroom quickly, and then place them on the desk. 'Which one shall I read first?' I asked myself. I pick up the top one off the pile. 'I know, I'll read this first.' It says 'How to Play Basketball' on the cover.

"Rei, Rei! It's time for dinner!" It was my mother's voice. Mother? Is mom home already? Gosh! How long have I been reading? I didn't even hear mom coming home. I leave the book open and went to the dinning room. Dad, as usual is at his seat reading the newspaper. Mom is bringing the dishes out to the table. I walk over to help mom.

Beep Beep~!! The phone rang. We have a funny type of phone, Nina always say that. Normally, phone rings in 'Ring Ring' sounds, but ours is 'Beep Beep'.

'Who would ring at this time? Oh yes, just remembered, Nina said she'll ring me tonight.' I pick up the phone. "Moshi moshi?" I said. "Hi Rei, it's Nina." "Oh Nina! I knew it was you!" I smile. "So, did you have a nice time with Mark?" "Oh... yes, it was nice. We had a drink at the restaurant, then we went for a walk in the park. I've only just come back." Nina said. That's strange, she sounded hesitant. Is she telling me the truth? "Did you happen to go pass the libary?" Why am I asking this? Do I not trust her? "Libary? No. Why do you ask?" "Nothing, I was just wondering." I hate myself for lying to my best friend. "What about you, Rei? Did you have a good time with Hisashi?" I'm stunned all of a sudden. Had she planned all this?

"Rei! Are you coming?" It was mom. "Nina, I'll tell you all about it tommorrow, my parents are waiting me for dinner." "Alright. See you tommorrow then." "Bye!" I placed the receiver down.

***Present***

That was the first time Nina had lied to me. Why had she lied to me? I stil don't understand.
