Ukyou beamed a smile as Ranma walked into her restaurant.
Ranma didn't look happy, but that wasn't unusual. After three years of
living with the Tendos, he still had fights with Akane. There had been
fewer fights over the past year, but suddenly they were on the up swing.
"Hi, Ucchan," Ranma greeted.
"Hi, Ranchan. The usual?" replied Ukyou.
"I guess," Ranma answered.
"Got into another fight with Akane?"
"Not exactly." Ranma watched Ukyou prepare okonomiyaki with her usual
expert skill. "How's studying going?"
"Studying?" Ukyou asked.
"Yeah, you know studying. College enterance tests are coming up soon."
"I'm not going to college."
"You're not?" Ranma asked, surprised.
"Don't need to. I'm running a succesful business, and now that High School
is over, I can devote all my time to it and you." Ukyou finished her
cooking and tossed it on a plate in front of Ranma.
Ranma paled at the last comment. He looked down at his food, picking at
it. "You should go to college. You could learn how to better run your
business, and set your school scheduel around running it."
"I didn't think you'd be an advocate of going to college."
"Well, if I'm going to teach martial arts, it'd help to learn how to
teach."
"Makes sense. Do you know which school you're hoping to attend?"
"Got a couple ideas, most of them are nowhere near here."
"So, I'm going to have to move my business."
Ranma shook his head. "No, Ucchan, don't follow me," he replied meekly.
"W-what?" she asked, her eyes wide in shock.
"I don't want you to follow me. Go to college, stay here, do whatever you
want except follow me," Ranma said almost pleading.
"Ranchan, I'm your fiancee. I'm suppose to be with you," Ukyou said
fircely.
"You're not really my fiancee... Akane is. Her claim is the valid one."
"Ranchan, I love you. Your father engaged us before Akane...," Ukyou
angrily retorted.
"Ukyou!" Ranma interrupted, letting out a bit of anger to say what he
felt he needed to say. "I don't want to do this. I've never wanted to
hurt you. That is why I haven't told you to stop chasing after me, hoping
you would find someone else. But, you haven't and I can't delay this
anymore. I am going to marry Akane. The promise of a child of Genma and a
child Soun to marry predates your father's agreement. I will make him
repay you for stealing your father's cart, but I will not marry you."
"Ranchan, she's forcing you to marry her, isn't she? That's why you've
been getting into so many fights lately."
"She's forcing me to choose. She's not going to let me continue this. I
either break off the other engagements or get out of her life. I chose
her."
"Why her? She hits you and insults you. Is it because of your family
promise? You shouldn't marry based on promises, but on love."
Ranma closed his eyes, willing his anger back down. He placed more than
enough money to pay for the meal he hadn't eaten. Got up and left.
Ukyou watched him as he made his way towards the door, tears in her eyes.
"Ranchan?"
Ranma looked back at Ukyou and said, "I am not basing my decision off a
promise."
Ukyou collapsed as he left. The one who took her heart away, just walked
out the door. Prehaps never to return...
