Hi!
After today (Aug. 8/ 97), I will be on vacation for about 4 weeks
(yippee!!) so if there are problems with the mailing lists, I won't be
around to sort them out.
Just thought I'd let you know, "just in case"....
Have a great weekend everyone!

I have just redesigned my site and taken the opportunity to include a
pictorial essay on how to carve a suiseki stand (well, my way at least).
May be of interest to the group. Its on my suiseki pages at the URL
contained in my signature below.
Cheers

Dear Collectors,
I am the newest member of your list serve and a very recent member of The
North American Viewing Stone Society. I have been a rock and mineral/fossil
collector for years and now know what I can do with all those lovely
specimens I have been dragging home with me.
I enjoy field collecting and need to learn the fine art of woodworking the
bases. Most of all though, I wood like to network with people of similar
interests. I am writing from Raleigh, North Carolina and if anyone is in my
area and would care to get in touch, please do so. There are only 3 of us
in the Society that live in this state and very few in neighboring states.
I thought that there may be an opportunity to reach beyond our mailing list
via the internet.
Don't hesitate to say hello !
Sincerely,
Hilton Freed

You just missed an update from Joe Davies (UK) that he has a new page on
his website on creating stands--see
http://www.btinternet.com/~bonsai.suiseki/ . As in many things Joe does
with bonsai and viewingstones, he has introduced a creative way to get a
difficult job done. In this case, his shortcut is to match uncut stone
bottoms to their stands using plasticine. Joe's stands are fantastic.
For anyone who hasn't seen them, I'd recommend checking-out Foredom's new
"Typhoon" tungsten carbide bits. Their structurally aligned tungsten
carbide points leave a smoother finish than other tungsten burs, are
advertised to last longer and do not load as quickly. They are red & blue
(coarse vs. fine) as opposed to the silver/gold traditional tungsten
carbide bits and available with 1/8 as well as 1/4 inch shafts.
From my short experience, the coarser red bit at 1/2 inch head diameter
cuts walnut rapidly at 18,000 RPM with no burning and no loading between
points. I'd call the finish from the red bit to be medium smooth--
outstanding for a bit that removes wood quickly without loading!

Several folks have written me about locating the Typhoon bits.
Obtain a catalog by contacting Foredom Electric Company at
mailto:Company16@aol.com . The Foredom Company is a well-respected maker
of rotary tools in the US. If you are interested in theire rotary tools,
shop the net-- for example, a great buy on their 5240 Rotary tool kit is
now available at mailto:mhc@pronett.net .
In the UK, Foredom bits are available from a company called Shesto in
London (ask for Richard when phoning 44181-451-6188). In Australia,
contact Carba-tech Woodworking in Brisbane (phone: 617-3397-2577).
Joe Davies asked me about whether these bits "load" when carving "wet (live
tree)" wood. Yep... when I tried it, it cut well (much smoother than
typical tungsten bits) and continued to cut, but it appeared loaded with
wood as I pulled it from the carved area. It very easily cleaned, however,
with light brushing using a brass brush, which Foredom recommends.

It's the search that counts !
If you want a copy of "John Rosenblum's Collection of Chinese Scholars
