Hotohori is the Emperor of Konan Country
because his parents died while he was young. His advisor took care of him
form there on. He was told when he a little child that "Suzaku No Miko"
would come in form another world and call upon the seishi. Hotohori thought
that she would be the one that could take away his loneliness and love
him for his self and not for the Emperor. So he waited his whole life
for her (Miaka) to come. He fell in love with her right away and
vowed on his life that no one would bring any harm to her. But
Miaka falls in love with Tamahome so he is at the side being "the shameless
man that is in love with her". Hotohori is quite vain and looking in
a reflective suface all the time. Quite the narcissist *^_^*
