Hongo Yui and Yuuki Miaka had been friends since
childhood. Even though in the serie,Yui was often cruel to Miaka, they
had a close understanding that all best-friends share. Where our story
begins, the two girls are in their last year of Junior High and studying
everyday for the entrance exams for Jonan Academy. Yui was sure that she
would have no problem with the exam, due to her many talents. When they
discovered the Shijintenchisho Miaka was sucked in, leaving Yui behind.
When Miaka, with the help of Taiitsu-kun, returned to our world, Yui
took her place.
She was left alone and confused in an unknown land,
and was almost immediately attacked by a group of thugs who planned on
raping her. She fainted just before Nakago found her and killed the
men. Nakago convinced her that she had indeed been raped. That was
the first key to his manipulation of her. Yui remembered reading in the
book about Miaka and her love for Tamahome. She thought that if she had
only been the one to stay in the book, she would be among friends and have
Tamahome in love with her instead of Miaka. She also thought Miaka had
pruposefully ignored her cries for help, because Yui could hear hers
on occasions when she was hurt.
When Yui fulfilled her destiny by becoming the Seiryuu
no Miko, the first thing she wanted was revenge against the person
she believed responsible for her pain: Miaka. Nakago talked to her
and asked her if she wanted Tamahome for her own and she said yes. This
was another example of Nakago steering her completely to where he wanted
her. By taking away Tamahome, the Suzaku no Miko would lose hope, as
well as her most powerful warrior. Meanwhile, he gained a happy Seiryuu
no Miko and a skilled fighter.
As the story progresses, Yui falls in love with Nakago
and her hate for Miaka grows. Nakago has no feelings for her, just
the powers she has that he can use to his own advantage. As the book draws
to a close, Nakago tells her how he had essentially screwed her over and
Yui used her last wish to let Miaka summon Suzaku once more. After
her rescue and return to normal life, she finds one of Nakago's blue earrings
had not dissapeared and she wears it even now, to remember what had be
fallen her in the Shijintenshisho.
