In the Fushigi Yuugi's universe , the sky is divided
up into four quadrants - north , south , east , west- and each of these
quadrants have seven constellations (seishi) dedicated to them . The world
is based chiefly on ancient China , and the mythology surrounding it .
The land is divided up as follows :
 North
In the north is the Hokan Country
, the protector god of which is Genbu , the tortoise . Its seven
seishi are Hikitsu , Inami , Uruki, Tomite, Uramiya, Hatsui , Namame
. Hokan is analogous to Mongolia , right down to the yurts . |
 East
In the east is the Kutô
Country , which is analogous to Manchuria . Its protector god id Seiryuu
, the Blue Dragon , and its seven seishi are Amiboshi , Suboshi
, Tomo , Soi , Nakago , Ashitare , Miboshi . |
 South
In the south is the Konan Country
, which is protected by the god Suzaku , the red peacock . Its
seven seishi are Chichiri , Tamahome , Nuriko , Hotohori , Chiriko
, Tasuki , Mitsukake . Konan is the analogous to souhern China . |
 West
In the west is Sailo Country
, a place of desert and flatlands , much like western China . Its god is
Byakko , the white tiger , and its seven seishi are Tokaki
, Tatara , Kokie , Subaru , Amefuri , Karasuki , Toroki . |
