LUNAR: The Silver Star Story Compleate

Welcome adventurers to the world of LUNAR, be this your first visit, or a return to the world you love, the arms of Althena and the world of LUNAR itself always welcome you.
LUNAR: The Silver Star was released to the American public in 1993 by the company Working Designs. It's plot consisted of a boy named Alex, who desires to become a Dragonmaster, and save his true love Luna from the Magic Emperor Ghaleon brought him to the very ends of the green earth of LUNAR, and beyond to the frontier. His adventures allowed his to meet Jessica De' Alkirk, Mia Ausa, Kyle of Naza, Magical Weapon Nash, the four Heroes of Althena, and Althena's herald protectors; the four Dragons.
The release of this game finally gave the American public choice between good RPGs, and Final Fantasy was no longer the only RPG game worth owning in the USA and Canada.
Now that I look back at LUNAR: The Silver Star, it never fails to amaze me how far this game as a series managed to change in only 7 years. From the original opening of The Silver Star, the amazing (almost mind blowing by the quality for its time) cinemas of Eternal Blue, to the incredible release, LUNAR Silver Star Story Complete. When LUNAR first came out it put a new twist on the aspect of RPG's, with its story heavy and character driven plot. For the most part, LUNAR held to its story very well, and offered an array of lovable and easily relatable characters. Though perhaps not as cinema and voice over oriented as its younger sequels and remake versions, LUNAR: The Silver Star was no less of a game because of it. If anything there were only a few hindrances to this original.

Problems with LUNAR: The Silver Star
"The hardest thing about reviewing this game is having to pick out faults..."
Yes, it may be hard to pick out faults it this game, but it has to be done, and at least I could only find a few major annoyances. The first and foremost of these is the fact that Alex spoke only one word throughout the game, ONE LOUSY WORD! I mean he is the main character, he could at least speak a couple phrases, even a sentence or two... oh well *shrug* LUNA.....(I couldn't help myself).

The second problem was more of an appearance issue, constantly in LUNAR: The Silver Star there were blackouts and lines as characters moved and cast spells. It did become a major annoyance during the game (battles especially) and was one of the more blantly recognizable problems. The spells as suffered visually, all looking a lot alike in many ways it didn't much help to make you feel somewhat disappointed to see basically the same spell over and over. The sound selection was likewise disappointing, after all you burn a character and hear "Thwack", you hit a character and hear, "Thwack", you freeze a character and hear "Thwack".

Finally the one thing I strongly disliked in the game was the absolute USELESSNESS of Mia and Nash by the end of the game. The two of them were pretty good character (I guess) to start out with, however as the game progressed they became more and more horrible in battles until I just basically stopped healing them and concentrated only on protecting and healing Kyle, Jessica and Alex. However this was not a major problem that I had with the game, after all I didn't mind the extra 100 damage or so that they added to the total, I just found that they died to easily and did to little to make their presence in the group really worth it.

In 1999, LUNAR: The Silver Star was rerelased as LUNAR: Silver Star Story Complete. Being a great improvement on the original, this newer version was also released on the Playstation console making it much more widely available to all gamers.
The Story remained much to the same idea of the original, albeit the fact that it went through a major plot overhaul the minute that you left Caldour Island. As well, the remake had many many more cinemas and voice overs in it as well as several other changes. Enemies were much more detailed than before (well duh!), and the spells were much more speclized and visually pleasurable. Even Mia and Nash were usefull at the end of the game this time around! A few people would have liked to have seen a character overhaul, espically on Nash whom many wanted to see a much more mysterious version of but I believe that the game was still a peak performance. We still hate the cocky Nash with good reson, still love the orphan Luna, we still lust the lucious Jessica and Mia, and of cource we still root for Alex.
