A STAR IS BORN
Namie
Amuro was born on September 20, 1977 in Naha city, the capital of
the Japanese prefecture Okinawa. Her mother was half Japanese and
half Italin
while her father is fully Japanese, Namie is therefore 75% Japanese.
Unfortunately, her parents divorced when she was 3 years old and
her mother had since then being taking care of Namie, her older brother and two
older sisters. Namie attended
Joto Elementary School and Ishimine Junior High School before she
followed her friends to an artist training academy named "Okinawa Actors
school" in grade 6. It was
at the acdemy that she discovered her talents in singing and dancing.
In the academy, she would
participate in mini concerts organized by the academy. |
POWER OF DREAMS
|
After
graduation in 1992, Namie joined four other girls (Ameku Minako, Takushi Nanako,
Aragaki Hisako and Makino Anna) from the academy to form a group known as the
"SUPER MONKEYS”. While
signing under Toshiba EMI, they produced their first single “Mr. USA”. Although it was
nota big hit back then, but it give Namie a chance to showoff her talents
to the world. Anna left the group for personal reasons after
the release of “Mr. USA” and as the group changed its name to the “Super
Monkey’s 4” they also moved to Tokyo to expand their careers. While the fourth single “Paradise
Train” was being produced, Hisako left and Nakasone joined the group and the
group is now known as “Namie Amuro with Supermonkeys”. However, before the fifth single "TryMe
- Watashi Wo Shinjite" was released, Naksone left and along came
Miyaucyhi Reina and Matsuda Ritsuko. |

All By Herself
Namie's
fifth single "Try Me - Watashi Wo Shinjite" was really the turning
point of her career. This Euro-beat styled single was such a
big hit that it sold more than 750,000 copys all over Japan.
Although the group's popularity was increasing, the group splited again
and this time Minako, Nanako, Reina and Ritsuko
all left Naime and formed another group called the “MAX” prior to
“Stop the Music” was released. |
Flying High
Komuro
Tetsuya, who is known for producing techno and dance oriented music
caught a glimse of Namie
and saw the potential in her in 1995. Later on in the year, Tetsuya
along with Avex Trax signed Namie and it was a great fit as Namie’s eigth single
“Body Feels Exit” under the production of Tetsuya sold more than a million
copies. Although Namie splited
from the “MAX”, but they are both under Avex Trax and sometimes they still
perform together. Amazingly all
the singles after that were number one hits. Beginning in 1996, Namie held numerous tours and concerts
all over Japan, as her popularity expanded overseas she also had concerts at
various locations in Asia. |

The Next Step
Her
new album titled "Concentration 20" is released on July 24,
1997. In her next album you can clearly see that
she is changing from her usual dance music to explore other types of
music. Now
it's near the end of 1997 and Namie had just turned 20, let's give her all our
supports and love as she steps onto another stage in her life. |
