Love and Sickness Chapter 1: "Explanation"

By Aimee E. Zapolya

Looking at the clear night sky, from a darkened room sits a girl. Her name is Serena. She is also known to her friends as Sailor Moon. As Sailor Moon she is the leader of the Sailor Scouts. The Sailor Scouts’ mission is to protect earth from the Nega-Verse, who constantly tries to take over the earth.

The other members of the Scouts besides Serena are, Amy who is Sailor Mercury, Reye which is Sailor Mars, Lita who is Sailor Jupiter, and Mina which is also known to her fellow scouts as Sailor Venus. They’re job is to protect not only Earth but also to protect Sailor Moon with their very lives.

A thousand years ago, Serena was the princess of the Moon. Her friends were also princess’s but of the planets Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus. They were all part of Princess Serena’s royal court.

Tonight, Serena is not looking up at the moon thinking of her friends, or her past life on the moon, but of her only love Darien. Darien is known as Tuxido Mask, friend of the Sailor Scouts. The only ones who know that Darien is Tuxido Mask, is Serena and her friends. A thousand years ago Darien was known as Prince Darien of Earth. Back then Serena and Darien fell in love for the first time.

Serena is thinking about Darien because he has been ignoring her. She keeps wondering about what she has done to him to make him avoid her. She loves him so much, that his rejection is tearing her apart. She has been planing on confronting him about it because he hasn’t explained himself to her.

Just then there was a gentle knock at her bedroom door.

"Come in." Serena says, responding to the knock, but not looking away from the clear starry sky.

"Serena? Are you okay?" her mother asks, as she opens the door to the darkened room.

"Ya, fine." Was Serena’s only answer to her mother’s question. She never once let her eyes stray from the starry sky.

Her mom wished her a good night and closed the door.

Alone once again, Serena got up and undressed. She took her cloths and put them in her hamper. She then went to her bed and picked up her night gown. She then slipped it on, and then sat on her bed and untied her hair to brush it.

Once she was finished brushing her hair, she stood up and shook her hair, then sat back down on the floor to look back out at the starry sky. She couldn’t get Darien out of her mind. So she put her head down on the bed and fell asleep.

About midnight, Serena awakened with a start of a nightmare. She then decided to take a walk to clear her mind of the nightmare. She didn’t bother to get dressed. She walked out of her room and went down stairs. She opened the closet in the front hall, and got out the winter cloak her mother had given her for her birthday. She slipped on some shoes, and left the house.

As Serena walked, she didn’t care where she was headed, just as long as was walking. She then found herself at the park entrance. So she entered the park, figuring the park would look lovely this time of night.

Serena walked down one of the paths that headed towards the lake. Just then, the wind picked up. But she really didn’t care. When she got to the lake she stood at the fence that surrounded part of the lake, and gazed out across the glittering water.

Five blocks away, an alone figure is walking down a deserted street. He is just out for a walk to think. He, like Serena, has had a nightmare. His name is Darien. He is the one Serena was thinking about earlier. He does love Serena, but because of the nightmare that he has been having for the last couple of months is the reason why he ignores her. He doesn’t want to, but someone in the dream told him that if he kept seeing Serena, she would die. So he listened to the strange voice, only, to protect Serena. It’s tearing him apart to be away form her for so long.

He has arrived at the park. He walks through the entrance and continues walking. As he approaches the lake, he notices a cloaked figure standing at the fence, that partially surrounds the lake.

As the wind picks up, the cloak of the figure is swung around by the raging wind. The figure’s hood is blown off revealing a mass of very long blond hair.

"Whoever that girl is, she doesn’t seem to be affected by the wind." Darien thinks to himself, wondering who the girl is.

Just then, the girl’s cloak is finally snatched off by the raging wind. She turns to look where her cloak flew off to, but as she walks toward it she notices Darien standing near where the cloak has flown to.

"Darien?" Serena thinks to herself. Stopping in her tracks.

"I wonder who she is." Darien thinks, as he picks up the cloak.

The wind finally dies down just enough for Serena’s wild hair to settle at her sides, revealing who she is.

At first, Darien didn’t recognize who she was, until he looked closer to her face.

"Serena?" He asked, surprised to se her out this late.

Serena herself, is surprised to see Darien out this late as well. She hadn’t any clue as to what to say. She want’s to ask him so much, but her mouth isn’t working the way it’s supposed to.

"Darien? What are you doing out so late?" she asked finally.

"I’m just out for a walk." Was the only answer he was able to give her.

He tries to calmly, give her cloak back, but it was failing miserably. So he decided to ask her the same question.

"I couldn’t sleep because of a nightmare." Was her answer. She talked slowly, and softly as if not to anger him.

"What kind of nightmare?" He asked curiously.

Surprised by his reaction, she turned around so he couldn’t see her face or his.

"Oh, just a nightmare." She answered him finally.

The wind had picked up again, but not as hard.

He walked over to her, and tried to see her face, but couldn’t from his position. He then noticed what she was wearing. A white armless gown that is long and slender. He figured that it’s a nightgown instead of an evening gown.

"Why are you avoiding me?" Serena asked at point blank. During his silence she had built up enough courage to finally ask. Her voice was still slow, and soft, but calm.

He hadn’t expected that particular question to come up.

"Because . . ." was all that Darien had said, trying to find the right words to tell her. "Because . . . a dream told me that if I didn’t avoid you, you’d be destroyed." He said, finally telling her.

"A dream?" Serena asked slowly. "A dream told him to stay away from me, or else I would be destroyed?" She thought to herself. She tried to figure it out, but couldn’t. It’s all to confusing for her.

She turned full faced to him. "But, that doesn’t make any sense. Why? A dream?" Serena asked still very confused by Darien’s answer.

He could see the confusion in her eyes as he looked at her. "I know it doesn’t make any sense. It’s hard to explain." He said, failing at an explanation. So he decided to tell her the whole dream.

"Do you know who’s voice it is?" Serena asked Darien, still confused.

"No." he said with a sigh. He could tell that she was watching him with more confusion then ever.

"A dream told him to stay away from me He looks ashamed. As if he’s done something wrong." Serena thought to herself.

Just then, the wind quickened, making Sernea’s hair fly. Her hair was swinging about her as if to protect her from him.

As she caught any loose hairs, Darien lifted her face, so that her could see into her eyes. "I’m sorry for how I’ve been acting, and treating you." He said apologizing to her. He put her cloak on her to warm her up. Then he put his arms around her and pulled her to him. She put her arms around him, not wanting to reject her anymore. She cried silently into his chest as he held her.

"Serena." He started, as he looked down at her tear stained face. "Until I find out what this dream means, for your safety, it’s best if we not see each other. But once I do find out, I’ll let you know." He told her seeing the pain, and anguish in her eyes. "I do love you Serena. I should have told you about the dream when it started. I don’t know how long until I find out it’s meaning." He then walked her home.

Once at Serena’s house he told her that he loved her once more before giving her one last kiss good night.

When Serena got into her bedroom, the clock read 2:06 a.m. She then climbed into her bed, falling asleep instantly.

When Darien got to his apartment he checked the clock and it read 2:20 a.m. He’s relieved that he finally told Serena about his dream. When he got into bed, he fell asleep, and slept without any nightmares, for once.
