Five Star Stories is a manga series running in NewType Magazine by Mamoru Nagano. The Five Star Stories manga series started in 1986 and is still going today. There has also been FSS japanese manga books that were published by 100% NewType Press and some by Toy Press (but coming out in May 1999 is FSS manga in English! Available only in Kinokuniya bookstores.).
The Five Star Stories movie is a movie you have to pay close attention to if you know nothing of the background, but even if you do not know anything about it, it's a fantastic movie. I personally had no problems understanding it. The animation in the movie is excellent and the characters are beautifully drawn, even the background details are great. The characters move with lifelike quality and their face expressions can be expressive without the usual tricks some other films use. The Mortor Headds are works of art as well as the other mecha. And I find the music wonderful. Despite the complexity of the story plot, I was completely thrilled by the Five Star Stories movie. It is a movie I would definitely recommend seeing if you can find a copy of it fansubbed. I am eagerly waiting for it to come to America in English!
If you are looking for a copy of the Five Star Stories movie fansubbed. Try out Anime Web Turnpike at http://www.anipike.com/ they have my links to good fansubbers that carry FSS. Just make sure you check around for a good quality one, don't go for the first one you see somewhere.
Here is a link to some character descriptions to help understand the Five Star Stories Movie better.
