I N T R O D U C T I O N
First of all, thanks for reading my FAQ. This is my sixth one, I think I
must have some more experience by now. And making FAQs is really cool. If
you have read other of my FAQs you will know that this boring introduction
is almost the same in all of them. But I have to put it here anyway, so this
FAQ is more complete. Why a FAQ about the characters? well, first of all,
the Samurai Spirits series is one of my all-time favorites, and second,I no-
ticed there is a certain lack of info on the characters of this series.
I was not sure about to which game system section submit this FAQ, since
I have included characters that appaear in Samurai Spirits 64, but I later
decided I would submit it to the Neo*Geo section. So here is this FAQ, you
can rest assured this info is correct since I am a die-hard fan of SNK and
the Samurai Spirits series. So I hope this will be useful to some people.
Of course, if you find anything is wrong or want to contribute to this FAQ,
help and corrections are always welcome. Well then, ikuze!

A Rounin. Haoumaru is a master-less samurai who wanders Japan to perfect
his sword technique. He is self-taught, though he received some training
from the old-man Nikochin. The same happened with Kibagami Genjuurou, and
this is the origin of the fierce rivalry between Haoumaru and Genjuurou.
Haoumaru is funny, arrogant and likes to show-off, but he always tries to
help people if they are in need. He loves Sake a lot. He is in love with a
girl named Oshizu. He is also a friend of Shizumaru. He has always been my
fave character is Samurai Spirits. Nikochin was Haoumaru's mentor for a
while, and also trained Genjuurou. One day Nikochin made Genjuurou and
Haoumaru fight to see who could win a magic scroll that would increase
their fighting skill. Genjuurou was victorious, but he was extremely brutal
and almost killed Haoumaru. Nikochin gave the scroll to Haoumaru and Gen-
juurou was rejected from his temple. With this Haoumaru became an even more
skilled fighter. This was the beginning of their rivalry.One day as Haou-
maru was searching for a fight, he found a village with all the people in
it dead. Haoumaru then found the last person alive in that village. It was
baby Shizumaru. After that he trained Shizumaru to fight and also searched
for the demon that had killed so many people in that village. He couldn't
find him until many years later, that is, when he fought Zankurou. A inte-
resting fact: Haoumaru's design was inspired by Miyamoto Musashi, Japan's
most famous samurai.

A fierce samurai whose blade is always hungering for Haoumaru. His violent
nature comes from a trauma in childhood, though some aspects of his per-
sonality hint at gentility. Genjuurou is always trying to defeat Haoumaru,
despite they once were close friends. Not much is known about Genjuurou,
and his past is somewhat shrouded in mystery. His fighting style is very
colorful since Hanafuda playing cards appear whenever he slashes his oppo-
nent. Also, he says the name of some Hanafuda card sets wile fighting.
Like Haoumaru, Genjuurou is a masterless swordsman and doesn't recognize
any law. The origin of his rivalry with Haoumaru was explained in Haoumaru's
bio. After the incident that turned him into Haoumaru's fiercest enemy,
Genjuurou realized that fighting for good was not worthy of his talents.
Now, Genjuurou is always hunting down Haoumaru and Nikochin to get his re-
venge. He has sworn to kill them both to prove he is the strongest and to
make them pay for what they did to him. But he does have a gentle side, he
has a pet frog. Kawaii! If you love anime, like I do, you will find some
coincidences between Genjuurou and some characters of Jubei Ninpuuchou,
also known as Ninja Scroll.

An invincible swordsman who is completely devoted to KenDou. He serves
the Tokugawa Shogun with total obedience. His mission is to kill whomever
the Shogun may want dead and to protect him. Jubei is the Shogun's best
and most trusted man. He is a legendary hero and always completes his task
quickly. This one-eyed spy for the Shogun may look cold-blooded and ruth-
less, but he is indeed a very gentle man, who loves peace and nature.
Though he always obeys his master, he feels bad when he has killed or hurt
somebody. As it is obvious, Jubei wears a hakama and daisho (a set of two
katana), which is a sign that he is a high-ranked samurai. His character
design was influenced by the famous Yagyu Jubei, the servant of the Toku-
gawa Shogun.

A young man who is famous among the girls because of his good looks. But
not only because of that, he is also a renowned swordsman. He is so hand-
some that he even has his own fan club. Ukyou loves haiku, and he is a
very talented poet. He is a silent person. He likes to fight with his
face turned away, I guess that he can't risk his face being scarred since
he is so popular with the girls. He made his katana himself, and it has
no tsuba, which is a hint of his great skill. His character's design was
influenced by Sasaki Genryu Koujirou, Miyamoto Musashi's greatest rival.
Ukyou had to witness the murder of his fans, his master and his fiancee by
the demon Zankurou. He avenged them. Lately, Ukyou has discovered himself
to be afflicted with a serious illness, tuberculosis. He was looking for
the perfect flower for his fiancee, which only blooms in hades. It also
was told to have powers that would cure his disease. He failed and when he
returned, all people in his village was killed. That's why he looked for
Zankurou. Now, still affected by tuberculosis, he understands that his
days are numbered.

Kyoushirou is totally devoted to Kabuki, and he is always seeking to per-
fect it and show its great beauty to the people. This is very hard someti-
mes, since in Kyoushirou's time, the japanese authorities tried to ban
Kabuki. Kyoushirou has mixed the art of Kabuki with the techniques of
Naginata to form a beautiful and deadly dance, which is the style he uses
to defeat his opponent. Because of his violent surroundings, he is off to
prove himself the greatest actor in the world and protect the Kabuki actors
and actresses from demons. He is always saying things with no much sense,
sometimes he says very strange things. He continues looking for what will
make him the perfect Kabuki actor.

One of the three Kazama brothers. Kazuki was taught the ways of Ninjitsu
at an early age, and continued his training until now. He possesses the
powers of fire. The source of these powers is his sword, Suzaku. He has
a incredible hidden potential, and sometimes this transforms him into a
savage entity. This worried his older brother Sogetsu, and was the begi-
nning of the rivalry between him and Kazuki. Sogetsu is determined to
destroy Kazuki's power. Kazuki doesn't like this situation.
Kazuki abandoned his ninja clan to rescue his sister Hazuki from Amakusa.
in Samurai Spirits 4. He is quick to lose his temper, but he is a young man
filled with passion. Despite he is pursued by his brother, he refuses to
hate him. He hopes someday the solution to this problem will come. Simpati-
zes most with his beloved sister, Hazuki.

water. Like his brother Kazuki, his power come from his sword Seiryu. He
is the oldest of the three Kazama brothers. He is a very silent man and
has been training in the ways of Ninjitsu since a child. He is an expert
in the techniques of spying and assassination. He is worried about Kazuki's
power and will do everything to stop him. This is a continuous struggle
between him and Kazuki, but he is determined to destroy Kazuki's power no
matter what it takes. He was assigned to kill Amakusa Shirou and his bro-
ther Kazuki.

A cheerful huge monk who is against the use of weapons. He was taken by
the old Nikochin when his parents decided to teach him a lesson, because
of his recklessness. Gaira doesn't like weapons, so he uses a huge neck-
lace to fight, instead of using some weapon. He doesn't want to kill
anybody. But he will do whatever is necessary to maintain peace. Though
his relationship with Nikochin is apparently not too good, Gaira respects
him. In Samurai Spirits 4, he got kicked out of Nikochin's Temple and now
roams Japan drinking wine and looking for adventure.

Hisame Shizumaru is a little boy with a mysterious past. Not much is known
about it. He is one of the few people Zankurou failed to slay twelve years
ago. Because his parents and all his family died in that incident, Shizu-
maru has been alone and surviving on his own. He is rumored to be the son
of Zankurou. Apparently he lost his memory in a certain event. He respects
and admires Haoumaru, who took him when he was a baby and taught him all
about KenDou. He tried to avenge the death of his family by defeating
Zankurou. By the way, have you noticed Shizumaru's striking resemblance to
Himura Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin? They are identical!

The tortured traveller. Hanzou is the heroic leader of the Iga Ninja group.
His life has always been full of suffering and he is constantly hiding in
the shadows. He is constantly traveling across Japan. His greatest suffe-
ring began when the body of his son Shinzou was seized by Amakusa Shirou.
He tried to defeat Amakusa and bring back his son but failed. He has con-
tinued traveling since then and is always tryung to defeat evil wherever
it lurks. His past is shrouded in mystery, though it is known that he is
a very gentle man, who loves peace. He would never hurt somebody, so he
feels bad when he is forced to do so. Hanzou is a natural leader, so he is
able to use his Iga Ninja effectively. He hopes that someday he will be
together with his family again. Hanzou's character design was inspired by
the famous Hattori Hanzou Musashige.

Charlotte is a young lady from France. She is loved by the folk of her
country, since she has always cared about them and helped them in times of
need. Also, she is always looking for the good of her people, she doesn't
want them to be opressed by the upper classes. An expert in French fencing,
destiny has taken her to Japan several times, where the greatest swordmen
of her time lived. She wanted to hone her skills to the maximum extent,
since she wants to be ready for battle when the time comes. She was trained
by her father Serge since she was a little girl, she is a very experienced
warrior. She is known as the rose of France, because of her great beauty.
Though she is female, her character design was inspired by the male hero of
a manga series of the mid 70's. She also is in Japan because she is looking
for the true perfection of the Way of the Sword and also because she seeks
the heart of Haoumaru. She wants to fight him and win his heart, since she
is in love with him.

The last opponent is Samurai Spirits 3, his weapon is an extremely large
Nodachi. His character's design really kicks butt! Zankurou was once a nor-
mal man who studied the Ways of the Sword. But after some years, a heart-
less demon possessed him, he tried to fight it but he couldn't overcome the
demon and thus, he became a demon himself. He ruthlessly slaughtered off
villagers, leaving a trail of blood everywhere he went. But one day, when
he was about to kill a peasant woman holding on to her crying baby, she pled
for mercy. And when he saw that baby, he found his true calling in life,
and it was to test his skills on true warriors instead of helpless common
people. That boy was Shizumaru, whose mother apparently died shortly after
that incident. It seems that Zankurou regrets his evil deeds from the past
and he doesn't want to kill innocent people anymore. Instead, he focuses on
finding only true and worthy warriors to fight and hone his skills to the
maximum and then be able to overcome the demon within him once and for all.

There is not much info available on Kuroko. He has always been the referee
in the Samurai Spirits series. In the first two games he played that role
more actively, but in Samurai Spirits 3 he was no longer the referee. The
characters had to fight him before Zankurou, and Kuroko would transform
himself into his opponent. I liked the fact that Kuroko is no longer the
referee, since it gives the game a better feel of samurai duels. Besides
the afore mentioned info, not much is known about him, but it is known that

ChichiUshi, that was handed down to her by her father Acha, who is now de-
ceased. Nakoruru is a very quiet and shy girl who loves being in unison
with nature and loves justice. She enjoys spending time with her little
sister Rimururu, Mamahaha her hawk and Shikuruu her wolf. She now lives
with her grandparents since she is an orphan. She is in love with Galford,
but it is a difficult matter for her, since she has to decide to fulfill
her wishes as a woman or respect her late father's will. Have you ever won-
dered why her moves' names sound a bit strange? It is because she speaks in
Ainu while executing them, and only speaks Japanese in her victory quotes

Taizan is one of the new characters that debuted in Samurai Spirits 64.
He is a very quiet man, who loves the art of ShoDou, (calligraphy) and
always strives to perfect it. He is a loving husband and father and is a
taciturn man. But one day, the evil Yuga captured his wife Sumiko and his
son Bokuzan. His family is his treasure, and since their lives where in
great danger, Taizan turned himself into a demon, who would not stop until
he can bring back his family. Taizan is forced to put aside his quiet and
peaceful nature to destroy the threat of the evil Yuga and save his family,
using a very artistic fighting style that consists of attacks performed
with a writing brush. By the way, I think Taizan's character design was
heavily influenced by the Ranma 1/2 anime. His face is almost identical to
Saotome Genma's, Ranma's dad. And in one episode, a funny master of Calli-
graphic Combat appeared to challenge Ranma, using a fighting style identi-
cal to Taizan's. I think I am not wrong!

A very mysterious character. Shiki is also one of the new characters from
Samurai Spirits 64. She was born as one of Yuga's babies. She was a normal
girl until Yuga used a spell on her to take her to the evil side. Yuga nee-
ded a pawn to complete his evil plans. And so, Shiki became his marionette.
She was told to find a man fit to become the perfect body for Yuga's resu-
rrection. She realized Haoumaru was that man, then she follows him for a
chance to take him away to the dark side. She is the mother of a baby. A
while after, Yuga's plan ends in failure and Shiki is able to return to her
normal self and take care of her baby. She is in love with Asra. Shiki's
beautiful eyes have two colors. Her left eye is red and her right eye is
blue. That's why she is named Shiki, since the Kanji used to write her name
means color. Her character's design is awesome, and she is really beautiful
and sexy!

hand. He is in love with Shiki. Like Shiki, he was used by Yuga to comple-
te his diabolical schemes. But Asra realized he didn't want Yuga to hurt
people and to create a reign of evil, so he opposed him. At the end, Asra
is able to defeat Yuga, and dies at Shiki's side after his life force was
used up in the battle. It is unknown if he really died. I hope he will be
back since he kicks butt and he is a really cool character.

I think GenAn just wants to give the impression he is evil, but he really
isn't. Also, it is believed that many years ago, GenAn's soul was in the
demon world where he suffered for his sins until the lord of that demon
world told him he would be given his body back if he pleged his loyalty to
the demons. Apparently he did. He has not returned since Samurai Spirits 2.
And by the way, GenAn has no relationship to Shiranui Mai from The King of
Fighters series. You can see this for yourself in his Samurai Spirits 1
ending. Just because they have the same family name, that doesn't mean they
are related.

Nikochin is a peaceful old man who lives in a temple of his own. He is a
buddhist monk who loves peace. Nikochin trained Haoumaru and Genjuurou when
they were very young. Then one day Nikochin found he had to make Haoumaru and
Genjuurou fight to see who would get a magic scroll that would make one of
them stronger. Genjuurou defeated Haoumaru, but he almost killed him, so
Nikochin expelled Genjuurou from his temple and gave that scroll to Haou-
maru. After that, some time later Haoumaru left Nikochin's temple and began
his life as a Rounin. Genjuurou did the same after the incident. They didn't
had any contact until Samurai Spirits 2. In Samurai Spirits 2 when Mizuki
began to release demons throughout Japan, Nikochin left his temple and went
to fight her. He hasn't returned since then.

good natured and cheerful. In Samurai Spirits 2, Earthquake is told he will
be paid for killing a demon. Obviously, that demon was the beautiful Mizuki.
As anyone would expect, Earthquake accepts the job. He hasn't returned since
