The Pentium III
It only seems like yesterday that Intel unveiled the new Pentium II processors. The world stood and gawked...and promptly went and bought out the processors. As if that weren't enough. Intel have now jumped to the Pentium III...and made fools of themseleves.
The Pentium II line had the ability to really boost software speeds with a reduced instruction code module and higher L2 cache. However, no software was programmed to take advantage of this. And now, just when the software programmers are cracking down to match PII, along comes PIII.
Technical details one can read in any damn magazine. The point I make is that Intel have just tripped over their own shoelaces...clutching a double-deged sword. The PIII has not acheived much. This is because it was released too soon after the PII. Also, the PII's were running upto 400 MHz. Who really wants an extra 100 MHz of speed with the PIII?
All said and done, Intel have really messed up with their marketing strategies. They don't seem to have learnt the lesson that hardware is always three generations ahead of software.
