It Always Gets Worse
Chapter One: Split
Chapter One: Split
*Author's Note* The mostly-Mars-Sailor-Moon fanfic you
have chosen to read takes place in Sailor Moon R,
after Emerald dies, but before Sapphire does, after
Rini is converted into Wicked Lady. Everyone already
knows about Crystal Tokyo, Darien and Serena are back
together, and Sailor Pluto has been introduced. Just
thought it would be a good idea to clear that up. So
without further ado and confusion, we present the
mostly Mars fic that is still lacking in title. Enjoy!

"Chad, I mean it! Stop singing!" Raye Hino picked up a
conviently located broom and waved it menacingly over
her head. The temporary manservant's eyes bulged and
he took and involuntary step back.
"Wow, Raye, I've never seen you so emotional. . ."
"You're about to feel how 'emotional' I'm getting and
it won't be a pleasant experience!" she gave the broom
a preemptive swing to show her intentions.
Chad took another step away, "Raye, wait. Maybe we can
compromise on this. . ."
"Yes. . .maybe we can," for a moment, Chad felt a
flutter of hope, but it was crushed when he saw the
dark look in her eyes. "You get whacked with the
broom, I live in peace and quiet. How's that for a
compromise?" She started to swing the broom again,
just as Chad bolted out the door. She promptly gave
chase. "You can't escape me! It'll be quiet around
this temple if it kills you!"
In a calmer part of the city, Serena and Darien were
strolling along, in the general direction of Raye's
temple, hand in hand, smiling spacily at one another.
Well, Serena was smiling spacily at Darien, she
couldn't vouch for what he was doing. How could anyone
honestly expect a girl to stay in reality when they
were walking next to the prime example of male
perfection? It was impossible! Or how could a girl
stay in focus when she was too busy thanking destiny
for her kind fate of Neo-Queen Serenity? And
ohhh......look at those eyes....
"Serena?" Darien glanced down at the starry-eyed,
drooling teenager attached to his arm. "Serena?" he
asked a tad louder, snapping his fingers infront of
her face. Still no response. Bystanders were starting
to give the couple odd looks. "Meatball Head! Snap
outta it!"
Serena shook her head and reality came back into
focus. "Ahh...yes? Something wrong, muffin?"
Darien sighed. "No. Nothing at all," he glanced at his
watch. "Serena, I have a really, really big exam
tomorrow. Can we hurry this stroll up?"
"Why? What time is it?" she glanced at his watch and
screamed. "Oh no! I'm late for the Scout meeting! Oh,
Raye's going to have my head if we don't hussle!"
"'We'? Serena, please, I really got to get home---"
"No time!" she grabbed his wrist and took off,
dragging him along. "C'mon, Darien! If we can get
there soon, Raye may only blow a couple of
gaskets....oh, why didn't you tell me what time it
was?!" The city blurred as Serena picked up speed,
solidifying once they reached the top of the Temple
steps. Darien blinked and rubbed at his eyes to be
sure he was seeing correctly.
Raye and Chad were running back and forth across the
grounds, Raye swinging a broom every couple of feet,
Chad ducking each time she swung.
"Chad, this would be much easier," Raye said in
between swings, "if you would just hold still!"
"Ahhhh! Wacko chick on the premisis!"
"On second thought, I don't think she would've noticed
that much," Serena mumbled as Chad and Raye started
running in their direction. "Duck!" Serena hit the
ground as Raye swung the broom once more.
Darien wasn't so lucky.
The broom connected solidly with his jaw, snapping his
head around. He dimly registered Raye's gasp of
surprise and Serena's wail before he collapsed on the
ground, unconsious.
"Nooooo!!" Serena screamed, scurrying to his prone
form cradling him in her arms. "Oh, Raye, how could
you?! What did he ever do to you?!" she demanded from
behind a mess of tears.
Raye rolled her eyes. "Oh, calm down, you big Meatball
Head. It wasn't my fault! He'll be fine."
Serena wasn't listening. "Darien, muffin...you can't
go...don't leave me!"
Raye shook her head in exasperation and tossed the
broom to Chad. "Go make yourself useful. Sweep the
steps or something." Chad offered a mock salute,
quickly making haste of his departure before she could
knock him sensless also.
"Hi, everyone!"
"Sorry we were late!" Serena and Raye both turned to
the entrance steps of the Temple to see Lita and Mina
appear, smiling and waving. Their chipperness quickly
vanished when they saw Serena sobbing, holding
Darien's limp body. "Oh, my! What happened?" Mina
asked, holding a hand up to her mouth.
"Raye clocked Darien with a broom," Serena sniffed
before letting out another wail.
Lita raised an eyebrow. "It was accident!" Raye said
in her defense. Lita nodded. "Where's Amy?"
Lita smiled broadly, "You'll never believe this, but
our little genuis in out on a date."
"Are you serious?" Raye gasped. "Amy on a date?! With
who? Greg?"
"Who else?"
The gossip exchange was interupted by a groan of pain
followed by Serena's squeal of delight. The three
girls turned to see Darien sitting, up, rubbing his
jaw, and fixing Raye with a dirty look."Have you ever
considered a career in baseball?" he asked
sarcastically.
She meekly shrugged. "Sorry. Are you alright?"
"You should be sorry," Serena snapped from his side.
Everyone blinked at the harsh tone in her voice.
"I am. I didn't mean it," Raye said, wondering what
had suddenly come over her friend.
"Sure. You know Raye, I think you're jealous."
Raye laughed nervously. "Jealous? Of what? You?"
"Well, you haven't exactly kept it a secret that you
wanted to be leader, or that you liked MY boyfriend."
"Oh, come on Serena, that's all in the past," Mina
said, also wondering about Serena's mood change.
"For the rest of us. But we come here and she
practically kills Darien? Coincidence? I don't think
so!"
"Serena? What's with you?" Lita asked.
"Nothing, I'm just sick of her," she pointed an
accusing finger at Raye, "being jealous of everything
I have and am!"
"I not jealous of you! You overreact to everything!"
Raye countered.
"Serena, I think Raye has a point--"
"Stay out of this Darien! For once, I'm standing up to
her!" Serena barked and stood up. "You keep saying I'm
a clutzy, brainless, meatball head! I'm Princess of
the Moon Kingdom, vastly superior to Mars! If I turned
out bad, that doesn't say much for you, does it?!
Compared to me, you must be nothing but a pathetic
nobody!"
Everyone was silent.
Raye stood still for a long moment, balling her hands
into fists. When she could take it no more, she ripped
her communicator off her wrist with her teeth, beaming
it at Serena. The communicator missed its mark,
clattering harmlessly to the ground.
"Get away from here! If you're so great, just leave!!
I'll have nothing more to do with you!!! Don't ever
come back, either!!" Raye screamed at Serena, fleeing
for the safety of the Temple, before anyone could see
the crushed expression on her face.
"Geez, Serena, wasn't that a little severe?" Lita
asked once Raye disappeared inside.
Serena just shrugged. "I don't know what came over me.
I just felt...furious. Do you think she'll let me
apologize?"
"Not for a couple of days. Not with the way she holds
a grudge," Mina answered. She glanced at her
wristwatch. "I have to get going. There's a volleyball
game in half an hour," she started to trot down the
steps but was interupted by an urgent beep from her
communicater.
"Guys, it's Mercury. I'm at the Dark Crystal...I need
Sailor Scouts on the double!"
"You guys go ahead, I'll be with you shortly," Serena
said. The other two nodded, sprinting down the steps.
Serena looked sadly back at the Temple before holding
up her locket. "Moon Crystal Power!"
Amy walked through the deserted Tokyo street, in a
daze. For once, she could have a night to herself
without worrying about the Dark Crystal growing in the
middle of the city. Just an evening with Greg....
"Hi, Amy!" a surly voice said from behind her. Amy
groaned to herself and turned around.
"Hello, yourself, Rini," she said to the pink-haired
woman floating behind her. "Are you ready to come to
your senses, yet?"
The woman narrowed her fire red eyes at her, "My name
is Wicked Lady, not Rini and my senses are just fine,
thank you!"
"Rini, you've been brainwashed," Amy pointed out and
held up her transformation stick. "I'm going to prove
it to you. Mercury Star Power!"
Wicked Lady watched with bored interest as Amy
completed the transformation sequence that had become
a second nature to her. "That's nice, dear. Watch what
I can do." she threw her beloved Luna Ball into the
air. "Luna Ball, Kitty Magic!" The Luna Ball
disappered in a puff of smoke and re-solidified into
an umbrella. Wicked Lady popped the umbrella open and
dark power shot straight at Mercury.
"Mercury Bubbles Blast!" the bubbles fanned out into a
thick fog, obscuring Wicked Lady's vision. Mercury
took advantage of the lack of attack and pulled out
her communicator to place a distress call. "Rini,
listen to me!" she said once she replaced the
communicator. "You're not yourself! Don't you realize
that? The little girl, Rini! Listen to the little girl
in you!"
"Stop calling me Rini! My name is Wicked Lady, or is
your brain too small to grasp that?!"
"Rini!" Mercury shouted. "Listen to yourself!"
"There's nothing wrong with me except you!" came the
reply. "You nor any of your friends ever loved me! You
deserve what you're going to get!" Mercury found the
tip of the umbrella pointed at her nose as the bubbles
began to clear away. "Say good-bye, Amy!"
Fine. If that's how she wants to play it, "Shine
Aqua--"
"Stop right there!"
Two voices saying the same thing at the exact same
time? That could only be, "Sailor Scouts!" Mercury
said happily when she saw Sailor Jupiter and Sailor
Venus standing back to back with their arms folded
across their chest.
"Rini, we're not going to leave you a moment's peace
until you come back to your senses," Jupiter said.
"That's right," Venus agreed. "We won't stop until
you're back to the little girl we all loved. Venus
Love Chain Encircle!" The chain of hearts lashed out,
knocking the umbrella from Wicked Lady's grasp.
"Jupiter Thunderclap Zap!" the small lightning disk
rammed into the umbrella, smashing it back into the
form of the Luna Ball.
"Thanks guys," said Mercury and glanced around.
"Where're the others?"
"Long story," Jupiter said.
"Rather grusome, too," Venus added.
"Well, nonetheless, glad you're here," she inclined
her head up at Wicked Lady. "Let's do something about
Rini here."
"Not likely!" came the defiantly reply before a small
grenade full of knock-out gas landed in the middle of
the trio. The three Sailors coughed and choked, then
fell to the ground, unconscious. "Hmmph!" Wicked Lady
said, wrinkling her nose as the gas grenade changed
back into the Luna Ball. "Never underestimate your
enemy," she told her sleeping adversaries. "I'm sure
the Wise Man will be glad to see you after you've so
thoroughly tried to wreck our plans!" she gave a brief
cackle before she, the Luna Ball and the Scouts
disappeered in a cloud of black energy.
"You've done well, Wicked Lady," the Wise Man
complemented, surveying the small barred cage full of
Sailor Scouts. "A truly sweet gesture, indeed, turning
these Scouts over to me for enlightenment. It's so
touching to see how you care about your friends, even
if they don't care for you."
Wicked Lady smiled and slightly bowed her head. "Thank
you. Now may I attend to more important matters?"
"By all means, dear child," Wicked Lady bowed again
and vanished back into her customary energy swirl.
"Indeed, a most marvelous gift," Wise Man said,
looking back to the cage before he laughed.
