Rg Veda (pronounced rig veda) was originally a manga series created by the talented ladies of Clamp. This was one of their first professional works and it ran up to ten volumes and two OAVs.

Clamp is also the creator of many other popular works such as X, Tokyo Babylon, Clover, Magic Knight Rayearth, Card Captor Sakura, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland and Wish.

Only two Rg Veda OAVs were made, with the story of Rg Veda remaining unfinished at the end of the second OAV.

Rg Veda is somewhat loosely based on Hindu myths and legends. The
word "Veda" is a Sanscrit word meaning "knowledge" or "wisdom" and the original Hindu Rig Veda is the "Veda of Hymns".

Clamp's manga, on the other hand, is set in a magical land called Tenkai. Various god-clans exist and are ruled by an emperor, also called Tentai.

Rulers of these clans are called by the name of their clan with the honorific "ou" added. Examples: Ashura-ou, Yasha-ou, Ryu-ou, etc.

The story begins with Yasha-ou being summoned by Taishakuten to his
court. Three hundred years ago, Taishakuten had killed the former Tentai and his general Ashura-ou, the god of war. He took the throne and killed all the members of the Ashura clan. Kuyo, a stargazer and Yasha-ou's friend, refused to serve Taishakuten and Yasha was ordered to "deal with her".

Of course, Yasha-ou did not kill Kuyo. Instead, he simply listened as she spoke the words of a prophecy that seemed to point the way to the defeat of Taishakuten.

Yasha-ou then began to gather the six warriors or "stars" who will rise to
oppose the usurper and end his rule...

How did I (Gigei) meet Yasha and Ashura? I was dancing in a lovely
clearing, practicing for my next performance at the Rite of Stars (held in
honor of Kisshouten) when Ashura and Yasha saw me. Of course, I
recognized Yasha-ou as the man I loved. They had taken my sleeping
place and I demanded that they stay with me in exchange for the hospitality I had shown them.

Ashura and I quickly became friends and although Yasha did not fall in love with me at first sight, I was still happy to be with the one I loved. When they had to leave I promised to join them after I had fullfilled my mother's wish for me to dance at the Rite of Stars.

However, I was not able to keep my promise because Taishakuten's men came while I was dancing. When I refused to tell them where Ashura and Yasha had gone...

Tragic endings are not uncommon in Tenkai.
