The last living member of the Ashura clan.
Three hundred years before the story started, Taishakuten seized the throne in a bloody war that killed Ashura-ou (Ashura's father) and the old emperor. Ashura-ou's wife Shashi sided with Taishakuten and helped him defeat the Ashura clan. Later, Shashi gave birth to Ashura and tried (unsuccessfully) to kill her child.
Yasha, guided by Kuyo's prophecy, released Ashura from the kekei (magic barrier) that has sealed her in for 300 years. Though I refer to Ashura as a "she", Ashura is actually neither male nor female.
Despite these things, Ashura is generally a cheerful, happy child. She is also very friendly and trusting, which sometimes alarms her companions since they usually are hiding from Taishakuten's minions. However, Ashura is quite aware of the trouble she has brought to many people, most especially Yasha. She feels extremely guilty about this and tries to make up for it by becoming strong and hopefully defeating Taishakuten.
Yasha-ou
Head of the Yasha clan and one of the strongest warriors in Tenkai, Yasha became Ashura's protector even though he knew that this act of rebellion would anger Taishakuten.
As a result of his not turning over Ashura to Taishakuten, his entire clan was considered renegade and was slaughtered.
When Yasha was younger, Ashura-ou (knowing that Yasha was the one who would awaken Ashura) asked him what he would do if the most important person in the world to him was fated to bring him disaster. Yasha replied that he would "protect him". Ashura-ou then told him to become strong so as to protect the one thing that he would value above all others in the future.
This is exactly what Yasha did. He protected Ashura no matter what the consequences might be.
