Ideas with roses

In a children's book I found some very good ideas for using roses. Again this section is an add-on to the site because these items are not really related to ROV, however I thought they could be nice to include. I hope you like them too!

Rose* perfume

What you'll need

For the perfume

Grain alcohol - dried rose petals (red roses give a nice colour, but you can use other colours)- small glass bottle with tight-fitting cap

For the label (optional)

A pressed rose - paper - clear contact paper - ribbon or string

How to make the perfume

Chop or cut the dried petals in to tiny pieces.
Put the pieces in a small bottle and add the grain alcohol. Be sure to fill the bottle completely so there is very little air.
Let the perfume sit for two weeks. Then uncap the bottle and strain the perfume to remove the pieces of rose petals. Smell the perfume.

If it smells like the rose, recap the bottle and let it age for another week, after which it will be ready.

If it doesn't smell strong enough, chop up some more dried rose petals and let the perfume sit for a nother two weeks. Then strain the perfume, smell it and let it age for another week (like above).

How to make the label

If you like, you can make a pretty label for your perfume with a pressed dried rose (you can place the rose in a book to press it). It is better to choose a rose of the same colour.

Lay the pressed rose on a small square of paper, then sandwich it between two small squares of contanct paper. Punch a hole in the paper ( at the top or corner), thread a small ribbon or string through the hole and tie it to the bottle.

  Scented clear rose** soap

What you'll need

2 pans, one small enough to sit inside the other - a bar of clear, unscented glycerin soap - half a teaspoon essential oil (rose fragrance) - food coloring - dried rose petals - plastic cups or other small plastic containers, for moulds (you can choose different shapes) - nonstick cooking spray or mineral oil

How to make the soap

Cut the soap into small pieces and then put them in the smaller pan.

Put the pieces of saop in the smaller pan. Fill the larger pan half full of water, bring it to a boil and put the smaller pan (with the soap in it) inside the larger one. Stir the soap as it melts.

Add fragrance and colour. Crumble up dried rose petals andadd them to the melted soap. (For astronger scent, you'll have to use the essential oil).

Spray the inside of your mould with nonstick cooking spray, or grease it with mineral oil. Pour in the melted soap.

Place the mould inside the refrigerator for a few hours. When the soap is firm, set the bottom of the mouldin hot tap water for a few seconds, flex the mould, and pop out the soap.

* you can use lavender leaves or flowers, mint leaves, jasmine flowers and gardenia petals as variants

** you can use lavender leaves or blossoms and mint leaves instead of rose petals.
