GOLD/SILVER WALKTHROUGH

WALKTHROUGH

You start by setting the clock (this game uses an internal clock!). After this,
a similar introduction to the old game occurs, where Oak talks to you and you
name yourself. No rival though... then, you appear in your house. Note that the
map is entirely new, I am not sure if this is Pallet. Go into the big building
where you get to choose a starter Pokemon from the table (and the professor is
NOT Oak!). The three available are:

- Hedgehog thingy (Fire)
- Crocodile thingy (Water, I chose this)
- Leaf-headed thingy (Grass)

Then, head left, towards the next town. You don't have Pokeballs yet so you can
only fight wild ones, not capture.

When you reach the first town, use the Pokemon Center if you must, then go
north. One route is blocked by two kids having a Pokemon battle, so go the other
way, to a hut. In there you find - OAK! He gives you a Pokedex, then leaves.
When you go outside, your phone (??) rings. Listen to the conversation, then
head back home. On the way, your "rival" appears, and will challenge you, with
the Pokemon from the start that is strong against yours (I chose Croc, he chose
the Leaf-Head thing).

After you beat him, head home, talk to the professor, and then go back to the
next town. A guy there shows you how to catch Pokemon. You can now buy Pokeballs
from the store.

Head north, past where the two kids were battling (they are gone), and enter
the next town (go up, then left, the cave is dark). In this city you find - A
GYM! Go ahead and fight the gym trainers and Leader. They all use flying types.
The Leader has Pidgey and Pidgeotto. What a weak Gym!

Win the badge, and then enter the tower slightly north. Make your way to the
top, fighting the monks and their Bellsprouts. At the top, the Rival beats up a
monk and leaves. You then fight this monk, and if you win, you get HM Flash.

(NOTE: A lot of people claim that the man on the road south will NOT let them
past. This happened to me a few times, but he did let me through after I
finished the tower. I am sorry; right now I do not know what you must do to get
through. As soon as someone tells me, I will post it here.)

(Second note: Togepi comes from somewhere round here, either the gym leader or
the research lab. Not sure which)

From here, go South, as going West is blocked by a "tree" (more on this later).
South there are caves, in one you must make up a puzzle-shape (a Kabuto!) and if
you do, you fall through a trapdoor into the other cave. In there you fight
these strange "stick-like" Pokemon who all look different but have the same Dex-
entry.

Further South, past a man who blocked you before (if you tried), you enter a
cave similar to the old "Rock Tunnel." Getting through is fairly
straightforward. You'll reach the next city, which is being held captive??
Maybe. It's Team Rocket! You can't enter the gym yet. Go to the north-most
house, and talk to the man. He rushes out. Return to the well you saw upon
entry. The Team Rocket man has gone. Fight the Rockets in the well, and once
beaten they all leave. (Apparently they kidnapped some Slowpokes!) You can now
enter the Gym - The Bug Gym! The Gym Leader uses Metapod, Kakuna and Scyther!
What a joke! (Except Scyther)

After this, head west, into the forest. You'll meet a Farfetch'd, that keeps
running away from you. Chase it until it runs into someone else and has nowhere
to go. The police officer gives you HM Cut. Use this to cut your way out of the
forest.

(Somewhere around here is the rival again, he has a few more Pokemon. I forget
where. He also shows up in a Pokemon Center somewhere here)

Next, go north, until you reach a big City. (Celadon?). Around this time, I
only just noticed I had an egg, I do not know from where, and - IT HATCHED!
TOGEPI! More on him later.
Enter the gym - the NORMAL GYM? Here you fight all normal types. The gym leader
uses Clefairy twice, and "Cow Pokemon!"

Win this one, then you can go north to come kind of park, with grass cut in the
shape of a Pokeball. You can enter some contest here, dunno what it does. I
caught a Caterpie. (!!)

If you leave and go East, you'll encounter that tree thing again that blocked
your path. For a while, it just kept shaking like before. Then, somehow it woke
up and fought me! It's a Pokemon! Presumably this is like Snorlax. I caught it.

Go north to the next city and the next gym. The GHOST GYM! All the trainers
have ghosts. The Leader uses Gastly, Haunter, GENGAR (yay!) and Haunter. Win the
badge.

There is a house in this city with Japanese singing girls. Each one challenges
you to a match with an evolved Eevee (including two new types!). Defeat them all
and the business man will give you HM Surf. >From there go West, to the seaside
town. There is nobody in the gym. A man in a hut somewhere in this town gives
you HM Strength. Surf south and then West to reach an island town, and enter the
gym. These guys use fighting types. The Gym Leader has Primeape and Poliwrath.
Not too tough.

Leave this place and head for the town with the empty gym. Make your way up the
lighthouse tower. No, you won't find Bill in there, but there are a lot of
trainers. At the top you'll meet the Gym Leader and her Pokemon (the steel Onix,
I think). She'll leave after a chat. Head to the gym and fight her. Steel Gym?
Magnemite, Magnemite and Steel Onix! Just remember - Onix weak Vs Water.

Next, head East, past the town with the Ghost gym, and enter the cave to the
west, exit the other side. You'll reach a little town with a gym and a fat man
in the way. Head north, not east, as a man blocks the path east, and takes money
off you for nothing! North then (Important: There is a toll booth belonging to
Team Rocket who charge $1000 per passage! Better to take the grassy route.). In
the lake is a Red Gyrados. Surf in and fight it (capture it, it's good!). After
this, return to dry land and next to a signpost you'll see.... Lance? Lance the
Dragon Trainer! Talk to him and he flies away. Go back to the little town, and
then enter the "store." Lance will rough up some guys then uncover a secret
staircase. Go down.

It's a Team Rocket base! Make your way through, trashing the Rockets. Defeat
everyone and pick up the items (two of them are keys, I think).

Rival shows up but does not fight.

Eventually you'll fight the apparent bosses of Team Rocket. The first is a man
(looks a bit like Butch!) and when beaten he runs. Make you way towards the
entrance again and open the door to the "reactor." The boss guy shows up with a
woman too, but Lance shows up. Tag team! You fight the woman, she's not very
hard (don't know who she is, it isn't Jessie). Win, then deactivate the reactor,
to do so, defeat the three Electrodes. Lance will give you HM 06 (what is
this???) and then leave. You can now enter gym 7 - Ice Gym! The Gym Leader uses
Seel, Dewgong, and a Wooly Mammoth type thing! Easy fight (these gyms are
disappointing.)

From here you could go East, however the gym in the last city is barred. Return
to the City with the third gym (the cow). Go to that building shaped like a
gothic tower. Team Rocket have taken over! Make your way through and kick their
butt. There is a huge locked door, but you'll come back. At the top you meet the
male boss guy. Waste him. From here, go downstairs, into the tunnel that exists
in this town. A previously locked door in this tunnel can now be opened. When
you go in, it's some kind of prison, but before you do anything, Rival attacks!
Rival now had the third stage evolution of Leaf-Head. Destroy him/her.

Then go through the Team Rocket prison, opening the doors (controls on the
wall) and picking up stuff. Take the lift up and out (you end up in the
department store). Then head into the gothic building again. Go up to that big
door, and open it now. Fight the Rockets up to the top floor, where you will
face both the he and the she Rocket bosses. After this, you can NOW go to the
eighth gym.

Sigh.... go back to gym 7. Now, go east, and through the arctic cave. Some
tricky ice slide things in here. Work them out for yourself, they're fun! When
you leave, you'll be in a town. Go to the gym - dragon gym! You'll need someone
with Strength to push boulders and stuff round. The Gym Leader uses three
Dragonairs and a new Pokemon - an evolved Seadra!

That's where I am up to now. Having beaten all the leaders, I don't know where
to go.

From here you can go East

DISCREPANCIES
- I can't remember where you fight Rival, it was very late at night/early in
the morning.

POKEMON!

New Pokemon I have seen! (Besides the ones mentioned above)
- Racoon!
- Sheep! (and evolved sheep!)
- Sea Urchin!
- Reindeer!
- Turnip?? (Looks like Oddish)
- Pikablu!
- Bruno!
- Giraffe thingy!
- Owl!
- Ladybird!
- Spider!

And probably more!

They've mostly all been redrawn (again), and some of them look excellent.
Magikarp is back to it's old look, only better, some like Kadabra and Raichu
look totally sweet. In contrast, some like Hitmonchan look totally lame.

Caterpie, to my recollection, has not been redrawn. Dammit! Why not? It's
mortal enemy, Weedle, has! Even if Weedle does have a big fat head.

And, AND, in Silver, they're all redrawn AGAIN!

Togepi: It hatches at level 5, and has something like growl, and something
where a heart pops up! WTF? At level 7 it learns Metronome! Some....weird attack
at level 17 that causes confusion! And IT EVOLVES AT LEVEL 25! Into.... some
kind of ostrich with wings? Far out!

Croc-thingy!: My starting Pokemon, had scratch and leer. Learned Water Gun,
Bite. Evolved at level 18. Learned A better Leer, and Slash. Evolved again at
level 30!

Haunter used an attack where it stabbed itself? Hmm. Also, attacks like Wrap
are done differently now, it looks like they continue to do damage, but only at
certain times, and your opponent isn't "trapped," they can still attack. I may
be wrong. Also if you wake up in a round from being asleep, you attack that
round too.

NEW TRAINERS!

Fire-Breathing Clown!: Uses poison and fire types
Pikachu fanatic!: This guy is great. He wears a black T-shirt with Pikachu on
it, and has a little boy with him dressed up as Pikachu! Uses..... PIKACHU!
(Also Raichu)
Cop: for some reason, cops attack you! They use Growlithes.
Twins: Two girls together on the map (harder to dodge!). Use bug types.
Rocket boss, male: Looks like Butch!
Rocket boss, female: Doesn't look like Cassidy or Jessie!
