Although this saga was originaly drawn for young girls, this amazing story has attracted a wider audience(notice I'm not a girl and defininately not that young). It was later developed into an anime series on tv(animated).
The star of this popular show is a regular teenager with special powers and a mysterious past. I haven't seen all the episodes yet, so bear with me, and I'll tell you what I know!
| Sailor Moon: First Season |
In the first episode of the show, we are introduced to Serena; a clumsy, ditzy, spacy, yet caring young girl. She attends the local Junior High (Crossroads)in downtown Tokyo, where she gets thirties on almost every single test she takes. One day, Serena finds a cat being picked on by a bunch of young boys. She shoos the kids away, and saves the small black cat, with a cresent shaped bald spot on it's forehead. The cat automatically takes a liking to Serena and follows her home. Meanwhile, in space, an evil power called the Negaverse is awakening. It's mistress, Queen Berly, plans to release a power called the Negaforce, which drains the energy from humans to feed it's self. But, rather than doing it herself, she sends a trusted henchman called Jedite.
Jedite comes to Earth with plans of draining the life out of people by summoning monsters of the Negaforce. Little does he know that his first attempt is going to be foiled...
The cat Serena saved(her name is Luna by the way) can talk, and has been searching the Sailor Soldier of the Moon. When Luna finds Serena, she knows that this "wining cry baby" has to be Sailor Moon. So, she decides to talk to Serena. Serena takes the fact that her cat is talking to her a little harder than Luna had expected, but is in for another shocking surprise when Luna tells her that she possesses special powers. Luna gives her a special brooch and explains to her that, with a single phrase, she can transform into Sailor Moon, defender of love and justice. She tells Serena to put her hand in the air and yell "Moon Prism Power!" As Sailor Moon, she uses her "Moon Tiara Magic!" attack to slay the first monster with a little help from a mysterious man who seems to show up at the right time called Tuxedo Mask. Serena's duty is now to stop the Negaforce and find the Moon Princess.
Later on, through the course of some strange events usually centered around the plans of the Negaverse, we discover the other Sailor scouts.
-The first new Scout, a transfer from a gifted school, Ami learns that she is Sailor Mercury when she helps Sailor Moon defeat the monster that was terrorizing her computer class.
-Next, a priestess from the Cherry Hill Temple,who has the ability to read fire, named Raye learns that she is Sailor Mars when strange bus-disappearances start happening by her temple.
-Kicked out of her old school for fighting, Lita becomes Sailor Jupiter after defeating a monster with Sailor Moon.
-And the "original Sailor Scout", Sailor Venus, accompanied by another talking cat(Artemis), is named Mina.
The Sailor Scouts are a great bother to the Neaverse's plans. So much so, that QueenBeryl actually destroys two of her generals (Jedite and Neflite) for their failure. That leaves Zoicite and Malichite to accomplish the task of destroying the Sailor Scouts. Zoicite is given the task of finding the seven Rainbow Crystals, that, together, will somehow form, The Imperium Silver Crystal. With the Imperium Silver Crystal, the Negaverse could take over the Earth.
Tuxedo mask is also after the rainbow crystals and the Imperium Silver Cystal, but it is for his own purposes. For this reason, the scouts think that he is against them. After Tuxedo Mask is nearly killed by Zoicite, he is captured by the Negaverse, and brainwashed. Sailor Moon is the one who gets the crystal, and it is added to her Moon Cresent Wand. With this wand, Sailor Moon is able to heal people who are under the Negaverse's spell by using her "Moon Healing Activation!" attack. Sailor Moon almost gets Tuxedo Mask back with her wand. When Beryle is finally defeated, Tuxedo Mask is freed from the Negaverse, and the Scouts can finally live a normal life. I did leave quite a few crutial details out of this passage, because no one likes the person who ruins the ending for them. So, if you don't already know, watch the show!

Now, I don't exactly know if these episodes are their own "season" or if they're part of R, I've heard mostly that they're filler episodes. Either way, I thought they were pretty cool. With Beryl Destroyed, the scouts have lost their memory of the past, and of eachother. One night, something hits the earth and causes a big commotion. We now meet Alan (or Ali in Japan) and Anne,(Their names are supposed to sound like 'alien' when said together), aliens from the Neagaforce that get their energy from a giant tree, the Doom Tree, that feeds off of the life energy of living creatures. In order to obtain this energy from humans, they disguise themselves as brother and sister, as well as students at Serena's school. In the first episode of this series, a reluctant Serena gets her memory back with luna's help. The rest of the scouts eventually get their memories back as well.
Alan and Anne send creatures called Cardians to drain energy for the doom tree. While fighting the new enemy, Sailor Moon realizes that she has lost the Moon Cresent wand. Her Tiara also won't work anymore. In one episode, Sailor Moon is almost defeated because she can't fight. Queen serenity gives Serena a locket with the silver crystal in it. This is her new transformation device, to transform she now says, "Moon Crystal Power!" Queen Serenity also gives Serena the Moon Scepter, her attacks with this are, "Moon Scepter Activation!" and also, "Moon Scepter Elimination!"
At the end of this series, Alan and Anne find out why the human energy they had been feeding the doom tree wasn't working. With this discovered they were able to start a new life in space together. Sorry if it sounds confusing, it's really hard to summarize this series (watch it and you'll see why).

Sailor Moon and the Scouts have again defeated evil, and finally have time off! That is until a little girl with pink hair falls from the sky onto Serena's head. The little girl is searching for the silver crystal, which disturbs the Scouts, could she be an enemy?
It turns out that the little girl's name is Rini and she's not an enemy. She has come from the future to find the silver crystal, which she had lost, and find someone to help her mother, who is being held captive in the future.
Now we meet the new bad guys, the Dark Moon Family. It starts out with a hansome young man with firey red hair. His name is Rubeus. He has been sent by Prince Diamond to find Rini, and capture the crystal points of Tokyo, so it will be destroyed in the future. Rubeus is accompanied by the four sisters, Prisma, Avery, Berty, and Catsy These are four powerful, fashion obsessed chicks who go do Rubeus' dirty work for him. Slowly, but surely, all four of them are turned from their evil ways, and become friends of the Sailor Scouts. When Rubeus is left to fend for himself, he gives Sailor Moon an Ultimatum. He captures the four scouts, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus. And demands that Sailor Moon hands over Rini and the silver crystal. as to what Sailor Moon decides to do, you can find out for yourself.
After news of Rubeus, Prince Diamond sends Emerald, the self proclaimed most beautiful woman in the Universe. She has long, green hair, and a laugh that is more annoying than the Barney Song. She is also trying to capture crystal points, beacause Sailor Moon prevented Rubeus from doing so. Emerald's tactics are to pour tons of nega-energy into weak points in Tokyo. She thinks that with enough negative energy, she can defeat Crystal Tokyo. Sailor Moon also foils Emerald's attempts, and goes to the future with Rini, after Rini finds out that Serena is Sailor Moon.
When Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask, and the Scouts go to Crystal Tokyo(Tokyo of the future) with Rini, they find out that Serena and Rini are more closely related than they thought. Emerald goes to the future to see Prince Diamond, and finds out that he is in love with Sailor Moon. Overcome by jelosy, she sells her soul (well, pretty much) to Wise Man for the power to destroy Sailor Moon. But, Wise Man double crosses Emerald, and her jelousy turns her into a hideous beast. Rini is alsoturned against the Sailor Scouts by Wise Man, Prince Diamond's visere. He brain washes her into thinking that no one loves her. Thus Evil Lady is born. When the Scouts find that Rini is missing, they high tail it back to the present. They frantically search for Rini, but when they find her they aren't as happy as they thought they'd be. Rini has been, (as Artimis would say) brain washed, rinsed, and dried! Her body has also changed from that of a five year old, to that of an eighteen year old! Sailor Moon is devistated, and tries, every time they fight, to get her back. Her eforts are, well, friutless.
Prince Diamond's brother, Sapphire, finds out that Wise Man has actually been working against them the whole time. Her tries to warn Diamond about this, but is stopped, permanately by Wise Man.
When Tuxedo Mask goes into Diamond's head quarters, and is gone too long for the Scout's liking, they decide to go in themselfs. Sailor Moon is captured by Diamond inside, and he tries to make her his bride by brain washing her. Stopped again by Wise Man, Diamond finally realizes that Sapphire was right, and fights Wise Man. As to the outcome of that fight, you can see for yourself. After this battle, the Scouts and Tuxedo Mask are reunited, and proceed to the final fight of the season, against Evil Lady who Wise Man is planning to kill, just to turn the Earth into a dust cloud. So, do they get little Rini back? Do they defeat Wise Man before he opens the Dark gate of the Nega-Force?

Raye falls asleep durring a study group session with the other Scouts and has a dream. In this dream, everything is silent (the only sound is her own frightened cries, and Serena snoring in her ear)an evil, back, force moves quickly through the city, destroying everything, even her fellow scouts. As the black force closes in on Raye, she wakes up, and smacks Serena. Raye is troubled by the dream, but doesn't tell anyone about it. She does fire readings to try and find the answer, but it doesn't work.
A day later, Raye is walking back to her temple after school, and is attacked by a monster,it is after her heart. The female monster is called a Heart Snatcher they are sent by a mad scientist named Dr. Tomoe and his assistant, Kiore Knight. The scientist creates lifeforms called diamond pods which combine with regular objects and become the heart snatchers. Their mission us to recover pure heart crystals, from people with pure hearts for some unknown purpose.
When Serena goes to help Raye, as Sailor Moon, the monster attacks Sailor Moon, and takes hold of Sailor Moon's locket with her teeth. This action results in Sailor Moon changing back in to a regular teenager. The Scouts are almost destroyed by this new monster, but they are saved by two mysterious girls, who attack the monster. These two seem also to be looking for the pure heart Crystals, but are they there to help the scouts, or do they have their own agenda? Because of her locket being attacked, Serena can no longer transform into Sailor Moon. This is a bad situation because the scouts can't finish off the monsters without her.
Soon, Serena is given a new brooch that gives her new power and makes some slight changes to her original costume. We are now treated to a new transformation sequence as Sailor Moon has attained a new level of power. Sailor Moon Recives a heart-shaped broach. To transform she yells, "Moon Cosmic Power!" She also gains a new scepter as a symbol of the love between her and Tuxedo mask - and thus, she gains the Moon Spiral Heart Attack. Sailor Moon is now capable of defeating this new type of enemy.
The scouts learn that the two that saved them are also scouts: Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. These new scouts have no desire to join the others and instead seem to be after the pure hearts as well.
Of course, Uranus and Neptune have their regular lives outside of being scouts. Serena and the others befriend Amara and Michelle but have no idea that they are the ones who saved them so many times.
NOTE: Okay, this has to be said or I'll feel very sorry for the people who believe theat they're actually cousins...Amara and Michelle are a couple. I guess that the translators thought it wouldn't be tasteful to show two women in love. That's a little understandable - I know that some over-protective parents would ultimately freak-out and start off on a campaign to rid children of such "offensive" material. I could go on about how much I can't stand it when people misunderstand one another or how wrong it is to fear someone or something that's a little different, but that is for another time and another page. Still though, the idea of them being cousins is just silly and seems to mess up a lot of the original dialogue. I would have rathered they were just friends or something.
Then, we get another surprise! Rini comes back from the future to recieve training to become a scout. She is also told by her mother to find friends while in the past. She finds several possible friends, but none of them are quite what she thought they'd be. Rini transforms into Sailor Mini Moon. I personally like her name in Japan better, (Sailor Chibi Moon) Chibi means small in Japanese. Rini also has, I think, the funniest attack,the "Pink Sugar Heart Attack!" which never seems to work when she needs it. The day Rini gets back, a new bad person is introduced. Her name is Eugele, a red head who's good with a computer, and has no driving skills whatsoever! She is one of the Witches 5. The Witches 5 are...well...5 witches that work for Dr. Tomoe.
The Witches aren't a very good team; just a bunch of back-stabbers. We're soon introduced to Mimet, then Tululu, and another two girls that I can't remember.
USELESS FACT: When Mimet's diamond pods break open, a spirit resembling a bird escapes from them (rather than the human-like spirit that escapes from other pods). In Final Fantasy VII, there's an item called 'mimet greens' which can be used to capture chocobos(giant birds).
Through the course of these events, Rini becomes friends with a girl named Hotaru. Weird things begin happening at Hotaru's house, like when we Serena finds the revived Kiorinite answering the door. Then, we see that her father is none other than doctor Tomoe himself.
There's more to come, have to wait until I see the rest...
