Constantly harrassed by his classmates for his mixed blood, Kaneshiro transferred from public school to the Taipei American School. During his high school years there, he entered show business through television commercials. From there, he made his debut as a singer in 1992. He instantly became a star of the Chinese-speaking region, singing in both Mandarin and Cantonese. Contracted to EMI, he composes and writes many of his own songs. In 1993, he began his career as an actor. He is probably best known for his role in the critically-acclaimed film Chungking Express, directed by Wong Kar-Wai. The film was well-received in Japan, where his popularity is now steadly rising
