Your Rival: Don't think you can go through the game without meeting this guy. He hates your guts and stops his progression every so often to take you on. He's also the nephew of Professor Oak, so he gets a pokedex and a Pokemon too. He challenges you right after you pick your Pokemon. He usually takes the strongest Pokemon against yours. Beating that snot-face jerk of a rival: Before you even leave your house, go to the upper-left side of your room and turn on your computer. Take out the potion. When your Pokemon's hitpoints are down by about twenty, go into the item screen and use the potion to heal your Pokemon (you should also be using Growl/Tail Whip to lower your opponent's Pokemon's attack/defence as he lowers your Pokemon's attack/defense). Suddenly, your Pokemon has more hitpoints than his Pokemon can remove. You'll lose a turn doing this, but it'll be worth it. Keep attacking and his Pokemon'll faint. Why is beating him so important?: First of all, it takes the jerk's ego down a few notches. Secondly, it helps your Pokemon grow by giving it precious experience. Beating him is essential because it takes a lot of fights with wild Pokemon to match the experience (and money) given by trainer Pokemon. And your rival counts as a trainer. Not to mention that meeting and breezing through your rival is also an indicator as to how powerful your Pokemon are. His are at the level necessary to take on the Pokemon of the area. How does he get those Pokemon? I can't even FIND them yet!: Your rival has a lot of resources, provided by his rich family. By the time you reach a gym, you'll find that he's already beaten it. This can get quite frustrating later on when you have to search hard for ways into the places he just breezes through. But, here's a tip. Watch what Pokemon he has very carefully. When you encounter those Pokemon in trainer battles or in wild encounters, learn what techniques thrash it and it's evolved brethren. That way, you can crush every one of his Pokemon.
