Who is Rei?    Cool, quiet and mysterious.  Rei is the ice that, while frosty, is also beautiful and crystaline.  Having a philosopher's spirit and a hidden energy that only the most fortunate...or unfortunate...will ever see, she is a living riddle.  An inticing puzzle that captivates.

How does she see Shinji?   Like most of her thoughts, we may never even begin to guess at her thoughts on Shinji.  What we do know, however, is that Rei grows to have a deep connection to Shinji.  At first, her loyalty and existance are focused on his father, Gendo....but....slowly, we see her shift to the younger Ikari.  She is flattered by his kindness, concern and attention.  Intrigued at his thoughts on life and Eva.  Unconcerned of his short-commings, and always confident in his abilities, even when he is not.  She is one of the only people who ever gave him a choice in piloting Eva, even offering to take the burden as her own.  She also lets him choose his own destiny at the End of the World...

How does Shinji see Rei?  The subject of much debate.  Shinji obviously finds attractive qualities in Rei.  Most notibally, her simularity with his long lost mother, Yui.  Oddly enough, though, Shinji rarely acts like a 'son' around her....and seems to actually want to protect Rei from harm.  He feels apathy towards Rei, wanting her to break out of her cold shell at times.  Asking her to smile and becomming worried when she looks so alone.  In a way, Shinji becomes the protector when he is around Rei, and he realizes how rare...and rewarding...that is.

Shinji and Rei, together?    Again, this is not an easy subject to tackle.  Biologically, Rei is family to Shinji, and in another world, could very well be his sister.  However, there is a profound, deep understanding between the two.  Fans of their pairing drag this into the light.  Elaborating on it further and showing that they are often closer than any other two people on the planet.  Most people agree, however, that they could never be together...at least not in a conventional way.

But then again, what in Evangelion IS conventional?
