Chinese Recipe for Sweet and Sour Vegetarian Meat
INGREDIENTS
- 6 to 8 pieces deep fried gluten
- 2 slices pineapple
- 1/4 piece onion
- 1 piece garlic (sliced thin)
- 1/2 piece red and green pepper each
For Sauce:
- 1/3 cup water
- 2 tbsp tomato sauce or ketchup
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cornflour
TIP: Wheat gluten (seitan, wheat meat, gluten meat) is made from the gluten
of wheat. It is a great alternative to soy-bean meat otherwise known as tofu. Deep fried gluten can be
purchased in packages. Other forms of gluten such as steamed gluten (zheng miàn jin) can be purchased in can forms and
baked spongy gluten (Kao fu) is available in fresh, frozen, and canned forms.

To prepare:
- Rinse the deep fried gluten, then wipe them dry and cut into equal pieces
- Deep fry them over medium heat till you get a crispy texture
- Drain excess oil on paper towel, set aside
- In a bowl, mix all the ingredients for the sauce (except water and cornflour)
- Cut the pineapple, onion and bell pepper
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in wok
- Saute garlic, onion and bell peppers, then add pineapple
- Stir in deep fried gluten to cook
- Add in the sauce, make sure you coat everything
- Mix the cornflour with water and add this at the very end
- Dish and serve hot with steamed rice
