She's the one responsible for the safety and well being of the children, as well as NERV's tactical coordinator; she's responsible for the safety of Tokyo-3 and of Central Dogma, this puts her in very stressful situations in which she has been able to suceed so far. Unfortunatey, she has turned to alcohol to forget the enormous burden she faces every day, and to drown the shadows of her turbulent past. But even though she tends to be a pain in the rear (don't tell her I said that.)she is a highly dedicated member of NERV's high staff.
