He's the Third Child and the son of Gendou Ikari, Supreme Commander of NERV. Gendou summons Shinji from near obscurity to pilot EVA Unit 01 in the first episode and forces him to fight the Angels all through the series, and in one episode even forces him to watch as EVA-01 destroys EVA-03 and cripples his best friend Touji for life.
Unfortunatley, Shinji and his father have an estranged relationship and since Gendou only cares for his job as Commander of NERV, pays little to no attention to his own son. This plays an important role in the performance of Shinji during many battles; it seems that Shinji operates the Unit in an attempt to get attention and approval from his father.(Personally, I think Gendou should be put in front of a firing squad and shot. But, that's my opinion.)
