Silent Vigil Against Violence Continues
Since Nov. 17th, a small number of dedicated people have gathered each Saturday to attend a silent vigil protesting the use of violence to end violence, specifically regarding the U.S. response to terrorism. Numbering from 6 to 16, these witnesses for peace hold signs in English, Korean and Mandarin declaring Violence begets violence and One must consider why there is war. A flyer prepared by the War Resisters League has been handed out. Now going into its 11th week, the vigil continues every Saturday from 11 am to noon on the corner of Kissena Blvd. and Main St. (by the Flushing Library). Members from the following organizations have been in attendance; WILPF/Rockaway Branch, Flushing and West Queens Green Party, Pax Christi Queens, UU Church of Flushing, Committees of Correspondence, and the Ethical Cultural Society of Queens. All are invited to join in this important statement. Signs are available or bring your own. Participants request that a respectful silence be maintained during the hour long vigil. For more information, call 776-5021 or 507-4467.
The U.S. and the world must respond to terrorism but to do so with further violence, instead of addressing the root causes, only perpetuates the violence and increases the number of innocent victims. Approximately 3,000 civilians died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11th. As a result of U.S. bombing, over 3900 civilians were killed in Afghanistan between Dec. 10th and Dec. 29th, according to two studies by Professor Marc Herold, from the Departments of Economics and Women's Studies at the Whittemore School of Business & Economics, University of New Hampshire. This information, largely ignored by the U.S. press, raises crucial questions about the effects of our countrys weapons, and the worth or lack there-of placed on the lives of Third World people. Information on the studies is available at "href www.commondreams.org/views01/1222-03.htm or www.media-alliance.org/mediafile/20-5/index.html Anne Bjornson, Pax Christi Queens.
