Chang-O, is the Chinese Moon Goddess. She was so beautiful that poems and novels have been written about her, but most importantly, Chang-O became an immortal!
Her husband, the Lord Archer, Hou I, was given the elixir of immortality. Chang-O took it for herself, and then fled to the moon, to escape her husband's anger. In other versions, Chang-O was sent to the moon by the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens, Yao Chi Jin Mu, to serve as Priestess there. The Hare, (a friend to several Goddesses), intercepted Hou I and would not let the angry husband pass until he promised to give up plans for revenge.
Each year on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, Chang-O is remembered at the "Mid-Autumn Festival", Chung-Ch'iu Chieh. People gather to watch the full moon, considered to be the largest moon of the year. "Moon Cakes" are eaten and given to friends and family.
