The first, Eat-Man (1997), is widely criticised because of its low budget (meaning less than brilliant animation at times, and occasionally dull plots with little or no action) and the fact that the character designs do not in any way resemble the style of Yoshitomi's manga.

The second series, Eat-Man '98 (1998), had the benefit of a much higher budget (due to the success of the first series despite its shortcomings) and also features hands-on input from Akihito Yoshitomi (such as chara designs and storyboarding). '98 also differs from the first series in that some episodes adapt actual stories from the manga. This was not attempted in the 1997 show.
Meanwhile, since I've now seen the first (and third... sigh) '98 tape, here's what I thought.
