Here is where I will tell you some of the things I've found to work when painting my squad(s). Also if any of you have tips E-mail me, tell me who you are, and I'll put them on this page.
1) I always spry my guys with a base coat of primer paint ( flat white). Lightly this helps
the paint to stick the miniature better, and also bring out the color better.
2) Use as small a brush as you can for the detail. I use a 10/0 brush. And some thing a little bigger for the rest of the painting.
3) Try not to use oil based paints. They take for ever to clean up and don't look as good. Use water based acrylic paint. Games Workshop has paint for the different squads.
4) Use as much detail as you can.
5) After you are all done painting try a brown ink wash over the skulls (if you paint them white) and a black ink wash over the rest of the guy (If any other color but black). The brown makes the bone look some what weathered, and the black over the rest makes the detail come out. You want to dilute the ink or paint so it is kind of water like. It should just leave a little bit of the color you ink wash with but still leave the color underneath there.
6) After you've done the touch up and the ink wash, and let it dry, lightly spray the miniature with a clear sealing spray. This way the paint does not ware off. You can get the spry for the base coat and the sealing coat at Wal-Mart for about a dollar.
7) The best colors are flat colors. They just look better!
Remember you can paint your squad anyway you like. So have fun!
