Bonsai in Bali
Part of the Bonsai in Asia Guide Book
You may be surprised to find out that there are Bonsai in Bali and although they may be difficult to find they are well worth the visit.
The first step is to find a "bemo" driver who understands exactly what you are looking for. Then trying to locate them is another problem as the streets are seldom named and I dont think they have heard of numbers, but this is part of the fun of it. Most of the nurseries are located in Sanur close to one of the main tourist areas, probably the best place to start is Sanur Tropical Bonsai which is the Bali office for the Indonesian Bonsai Groups. If you are limited for time it is also one of the largest nurseries with over 2000 Bonsai.
Right behind this on the beach is the Bonsai Cafe where you can spend time browsing and talking while your family visit the Sanur beach markets just North of here. Many of the trees you see in Bali are collected, and are quite large and impressive, and some of the nurseries quite large. Common plants used are Casaurina, Pemphis Accidulus, Tamarind, Murraya and various Ficus Sp. Ceramic pots are rare as they are too expensive for the locals to buy. Some of the nurseries make there own pots from cement or buy them from a town called Kapal (this is the only town that has artisans that make them).

Update about Bonsai in Bali 2001
In Bali I saw top some notch plants, especially at BONSAI INDAH, Mr Tawi`s collection at NO 115. All his trees were healthy and looked so wonderful. I thought they all scored 95-100%. Sadly he died on the 17th August 2000, his son succeeds him and unfortunately they do not speak any English here.
At Sanur Tropical Bonsai, also now known as Cafe Bonsai, things have improved as they had an excelent display, and were busy working on trees for an exhibition. Also a new display area is planned for exhibition trees.
The other impressive site was in Karangasem. Mr Ketut Wenten had about 6-7 trees which were very fine, the rest were ok to poor.
The site at Banjar Kisempar Kelod Abang has closed.
In Klungkung, I visited
137, they had a few so-so trees. At Banjar Minggir Gelgel I saw about 60-70
plants but nothing impressive, He told me the other collection at Garden Bonsai
had closed.
