Statement of Purpose:

My title is inspired by Lafcadio Hearn, one of the first Westerners to write extensively about Japan. Hearn entitled one of his books Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan . (Click here for a photo of Hearn's garden from his beloved house in Matsue.)

I recently graduated from The College of William and Mary as an East Asian Studies major. I spent my junior year studying in Japan and I wanted to set up a homepage that would summarize some of my experiences.

I wanted to highlight some of the amazing places I visited while living in Japan, most importantly Kanazawa, the city I called home for 10 months of my life. I also wanted to include information highlighting Japanese society and culture, specifically as I encountered it through my travels.

Through the articles on this website, I want to help teach people about Japan. I am hoping to use my interests in travel and photography to help convey what I find so provocative about Japan. I want to inspire curiosity and interest in Japanese culture. And while I know that some of the information on this website is already throughly covered on the internet, I hope I am providing at least some information that is insightful, and perhaps even unique.

Japanese culture has definately become more familiar to me since spending a year in Kanazawa, and I hope that through visiting my web page Japan and its culture won't seen quite as unfamiliar to you.
