Born in Edo (old Tokyo), she lived with her parents at the Dojo. Her father died a year before she met Kenshin (1877). She earns her living by teaching Kamiya Katsushin Ryu to students, but after the incident with Gohei Hiruma, she's had a hard time getting new students. Her only active student right now is Yahiko Myojin. She's had other students along the way, but he's the only steady one living with her.
Kaoru loves Kenshin. But she understands how he is, as well as how difficult a past like his is to overcome. So, she seemingly is waiting for the right moment for things to work out better between them. Most times, she's overcome with emotion when Kenshin's involved (ex. When Kenshin left Kaoru to return to the life of a rurouni to defeat Shishio Makoto, she cried and cried, then was in the deepest depression known to man. .). She loves him THAT much. She was jealous of Megumi in the beginning, but she had a deeper respect for her now. Megumi's like a "older sister" to Kaoru, now.
She fiercely believes in her Katsushin Ryu. The motto is what got her all the people living under her roof. She can be like a dictator at times with regards to cleaning the house and other stuff, but generally Kaoru is a caring, yet strong young woman.
