Before the Meiji Era, Kenshin was also known as the Hitokiri Battousai, "a master assassin". Working with the Ishin Shi Shi Party, he helped to pave the way to a more peaceful era. Although swords were outlawed as of Meiji 1, Kenshin continues to carry his reversed blade, the Sakaba. He is greatly feared as the Battousai because of the fierceness of his fighting, as well as his infamous fighting style, Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. He is legendary among the people.
Kenshin's original name was Shinta. When he was 6, his guardians (both parents were killed years before) were killed and he was orphaned. His master, Seijuro Hiko, found him and decided to teach him the way of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. Seijuro renamed Shinta to Kenshin, claiming that name wasn't good enough. At age 14, he left Hiko-sensei to join the Ishin Shi Shi. At age 19, Kenshin married a girl named Tomoe Yukishiro. It was a short marriage, as she died just after the new year of Meiji. That and several other events in his life made him live his life as a rurouni, "a wanderer".
Travelling all over Japan for a few years, he visited Tokyo, meeting Kaoru Kamiya for the first time. Their relationship is strange, although it's obvious how Kenshin feels about her. Kenshin went to live in the Dojo with Kaoru. Kenshin's a decent cook, certainly better than Kaoru. He plays the role of housemaid; does the laundry, cooking, cleaning, bath drawing, and so on. He's content with it.
