Vietnam's Population to Reach 100 Million in 2024

by Vu Kim Chung

Vietnam's population is projected to reach 100 million by 2024, according to the General Department of Statistics' report delivered to a seminar Announcing Vietnam's Projected Population from 1994-2024 held in Hanoi on June 1, 1999 to serve the cause of socio-economic development.

According to the experts, one of the most convincible suppositions on population forecast results from 1994-2024 shows that the annual population growth rate is observed at 1.76 per cent, lower than that in the period 1979-1989; the growth rates in the 8 geographic regions nationwide are relatively balanced. Declining population growth rate is observed for all geographic regions in Vietnam.

By 2024, the growth rate in the country's two most populous regions, the Red River Delta and the Mekong Delta, will be the lowest, just 0.5 percent.

The report was conducted with technical assistance of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and built on work conducted under an earlier project designed to build the GSO's capacity in conducting population censuses and projections.
