Kaika's Wounds

By Jani-chan

Notes from author: This takes place after Amiboshi’s death, and before Suboshi finds Kaika. This is what I was waiting on to take place.

~~~~~~~
Kaika was walking to the market; his parents wanted him to pick up some groceries for dinner. Suddenly, a wave of pain began emanating from his arm, as though someone were carving into him. Unwrapping his wristbands, he rolled up his sleeve to look at his arm. Etched into it were:
  • new string for ryuu-sei-sui
  • tofu for Yui-sama
  • dozen eggs
  • chicken
Baffled, Kaika stared at his arm and continued walking to the market. Just in case it was a message from his parents, he bought the items on the list.
Arriving home, he discovered the message wasn’t from his parents, and he’d wasted money on unneeded products.
The next week, he remembered the incident as he walked to market. In order not to forget anything, he scratched his shopping list into his arm.
Elsewhere in Kutou-koku:
“Owie!” Suboshi yelped while attempting to engage Yui-sama in a conversation.
“What is it, Suboshi?” Nakago questioned coldly, walking through the door.
“I don’t know.” He rolled up his sleeve: a shopping list. Suddenly, it hit him. “ANIKI!” Hurriedly tearing at his clothes, Suboshi freed his other arm and wrote, “What’s happening? Where are you?”
Back at the peaceful village:
Kaika felt a sharp pain on his other arm. He groaned. This could get painful. He hoped the message sender wouldn’t mess up his shopping list.
Reading the message he wondered who had sent it and how he was supposed to answer. Looking around he asked, “Hello?” Then, he thought maybe he should try writing on his arm. “Who are you?”
~~~~~~~

Kutou-koku:

Suboshi was shocked! Maybe this wasn’t Amiboshi! Wait. Of course it was; no one else could do this. He must have lost his memory. Suboshi found a blank space on his leg. “Your younger brother, Shunkaku. Where are you?”

~~~~~~~
Village:
‘I don’t have a younger brother . . . do I?’ He wrote: “Don’t have a brother. Would like to meet. Give you your groceries.”
~~~~~~~

Kutou:

Suboshi grinned. It seemed writing shopping lists was a good idea. “Thanks. WHERE ARE YOU?”

~~~~~~~
Village:
‘Oops.’ Switching legs, Kaika drew a map. Then, “Must go. Bye.”
~~~~~~~

Kutou:

“Aniki. I’ll come for you.”

Nakago looked at the boy calculatingly. “Bring him back.”

“Yosh’” Then, Suboshi went running off, after treating his wounds and copying the map. Out of sight, he began skipping and singing. “Aniki’s alive! Gonna see my aniki!”

~~~~~~~
Village - a few days later:
Suboshi arrived in town and was ready to begin asking people where Amiboshi’s house was.
“Kaika!” he heard a voice yell. Suboshi continued walking. “Kaika! I’m talking to you!” Someone was going to be in trouble, he was sure.
A hand fell heavily on Suboshi’s shoulder, spinning him around. “Kaika!” the voice thundered in his face.
“Um. Hi. I’m Suboshi. Who are you?”
As the owner of the voice was about to protest, Amiboshi appeared. “Gomen nasai,” he apologized. “It’s all a case of mistaken identity . . . ” His voice trailed off as he realized the boy looked just like him. Regaining his composure, “I’m Kaika. Please forgive us.”
Suboshi could barely contain his grin. “ANIKI!!” Suboshi jumped on his brother. “Aniki! You’re alive!” At the lack of comprehension on Amiboshi/Kaika’s face, Suboshi’s eyes watered. “Aniki, don’t you **sniff** remember me?”
Their seishi symbols flashed in unison.
Then: “Why were you going grocery shopping anyway?”
Suboshi blushed. “Well, I . . .”
“I know! You’ve married Yui-sama!” Amiboshi grinned. “My little brother is so ---”
“Iiiieeee! Aniki! It’s not like that! aaaaahhhh!”
Suboshi’s tortured screams resounded all the way to Kutou’s capital.
~~~~~~~

Kutou:

“Looks like Suboshi won’t be coming back,” Soi purred.

“Hn,” Nakago answered.
