The story of Evangelion starts with the Second Impact in 2000 A. D. The human population reduce to the half due to this event and to its consequences. The official version wa that a massive meteorite crashed in the Antarctica. However, the truth is more complicated than that. Actually, the cause of the Second Impact was the encounter between humans and a being called angel (shito). Fifteen years later, angels came back, but this time humanity is prepared. The bio-mecha Evangelion has been produced, and it is the only hope of human race.
 
 

The series is more than action. It is a true self analysis. It explains the meaning of life. I don't want to tell you how it ends, you better get the 26 episodes.
