Annual Report of St. Lawrence Old Boys' Association for the year 1998-99 ending on 31st March 1999
My sincerest gratitude to all the members of the association, and the school authority for the help and support extended to us in executing all the activities of the association. The events those took place between April 98 and March 99 are as follows:
MEMBERSHIP
The present membership strength as on 31.03.99
Life Member : 595 Annual Member : 40
FREE CLINIC
The pride of our association, our free clinic completes twelve years of service to the society. In addition to Dr. P.K. Roy, who had been rendering his valuable service to the Clinic, we had the privilege of getting dedicated service of Dr. Mrs. Shukla Lahiri from the Month of June 99. This has taken away the worry of non-availability of the Doctors. We also need to thank Mr.. Anand Bakshish for his exemplary service rendered to the clinic regularly. It will not be out of place to mention that none of them are ex-student of our school. Can we not expect spontaneity and eagerness from our members and those who have just stepped out or about to step out of the protective cover of the Alma- Mater?
NEWSLETTER
The newsletter is now regular and electronically handled. We are open to suggestions make it more attractive. With all our efforts, a large block of members complains of non-receipt of the same. We are requesting the members to ensure that their addresses are updated. It is also posted on the SLOBA web site.
SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
The scholarship scheme sponsored by Ms Waltraud Bohner of Germany, which was restricted to the five students of Classes V and VI, have now been made open for all the classes, as desired by the school authority. Mr.. Smaran Chowdhury of SLOBA, who is the key person for getting the fund, organized an introductory meeting of recipients and their parents, with Ms. Bohner's representative Mr.. Manfred Bienek from Germany in the school.
SLOBA organized a Career Counseling Programme for the students. This year the theme of the programme as Computer as a Reference Tool in the Library. Mr. Debashish Gupta of APTECH made a presentation for the students and was very interesting. They also had a special presentation for the teachers. Unfortunately, most of the teachers were not available after class hours and hence it could not be shown.
The members of SLOBA have set up a Cricket Coaching Camp, for the present students of our school and the wards of SLOBA members. The coaches of the camp are Sri Moloy Banerjee and Sri Subrata Dutta. Mr.. Kalyan Dhall of our school is the over all supervisor. There are more than seventy participants in the camp.
SLOBA made Ayanava Majumdar, this year's topper in Higher Secondary in West Bengal a Life Member of the association. He was also felicitated on his achievement.
SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
We had set aside all our cultural activities in order to make the Second National Congress of Jesuit Alumni/ae held at Calcutta from 22nd to 24th January, 99 a grand success. The congress was co-hosted by ALSOC, SXCCAA and SLOBA. The theme of the conference was: In the dance of your festival of lights let me add my own little lamp. Months of preparatory meetings and the three days of togetherness during the congress dissolved all demarcations among the three host associations. It was definitely a great experience. We hope that this bond gets stronger day by day.
The cultural evening at our school was on the 24th January, followed by a family dinner. Our entire school was lit up and we had a memorable evening. It was once again proved that any association having Mr.. Asit Roy as a GB Member can dare to fight at Kargil without any arms. The evening started with Sri Partha Chatterjee on Sitar, followed by Sri Saktibrata Das singing modern Bengali songs. The programme ended with popular Hindi songs by a group of budding young performers of our school. Their performance was excellent and compelled the delegates including Fr. Meaghre of St. Xavier's Bokaro to join hands and dance in front of the stage. The delegates were all praise for our association for being so culturally rich and the hospitality extended to them. We would have been happier if the participation level of our members were slightly more encouraging. The other delegates outnumbered us even on the evening in our school.
The AGM cum REUNION held on 6th December 98 were well attended. We had an assorted cultural evening with all possible types of songs.
A limited over cricket match was played between SXCCAA and SLOBA at our school ground on March 14, 1999. SLOBA won the match handsomely. The match followed by lunch hosted by SXCCAA.
SLOBA annual picnic was held at Narendrapur on January 03, 1999. Like last year, it was a resounding success with great old as well as new popular Hindi tunes from Mrs. and Mr. Om Prakash Shah.
WORLD WIDE WEB
SLOBA has put up a web site for the association to carry news of its various activities and the events happening in the school and to keep in touch with all its members spread around the globe. It now carries information, newsletters and all other relevant details on the numerous activities of the association. We are now looking at having an exclusive web address and appeal to our members in the allied field for help. The present URL of the SLOBA home page is :
