The day we met Nick Monroe
by Sara Davies

On December 30, 1998, we (Beth, Mrs. Harter, and I) went shopping at Arden Fair Mall in Sacromento, California. After spending the afternoon there and eating dinner we decided to pay a visit to the KWOD radio station. Beth and I hoped to see Nick Monroe and get an autograph. We drove down "K" Street. Having no clue where KWOD was located, we asked a man on the sidewalk for directions. He pointed to a tall building and told us it was on the 22th floor.
We excitedly pulled into the garage under the building and ran to the elevator. The elevator took us to the lobby where we found a second elevator used for all floors. We took the elevator to the 22nd floor. As the doors opened, we ran out, only to find a quite glim hallway. No KWOD signs or music could be heard. We concluded it was the wrong floor and the man on the street told us 27th, not 22nd. We pilled back into the elevator and continued our journey upward. The number 27 lit and the elevetor stopped.
We carefully walked out of the elevator, stepped into the hallway. It was just as calm and silent as the other floor. As we ventured onward we began to hear a faint sound..... a sound of music, then the oh-so-familiar sound of "fifty-one minutes of KWOD 106.5". I gave a shriek, which was soon hushed by Beth.
We aproached the door and knocked. "Who is it?" asked the easily recognisable Nick voice. Beth and I screamed our names. Beth then declared that her mom was there too. He flung the door open and said we had five minutes.
Hurriedly we rushed into the studio and occupied a couple chairs. Chairs we later realized had held bands like Garbage and Oasis. We sat there as Nick anounced and changed a song. Then he directed his attention on us.
He said that he really wasn't like that (how he is on the radio). We gave him our fan letters. He raved over Micah's hand made letter out of a placemat from our dinner's reasturant. Beth and I also gave him fan letters for Capone, the DJ after Nick.
Nick then asked us how we got up to the studio. We told him we took the elevator. He chuckled and called security. Nick told Thomas he had some wild teenagers up there and teasingly told him to come up and take us away.
Between Nick answering call, getting in a few words on air, and constantly changing songs he gave us all aoutographs and allowed us to get pictures with him. He was very kind. Nick disscussed issues with Mrs. Harter and assured her he doesn't suport drugs and inappropriate bands. Nick also told us about his daughter, but seemed sad to say he couldn't bring her to the studio because of language or rude comments callers may have of him. He said that "he wouldn't understand".
As soon as we came, we had to leave. Our time flew by quickly. We parted with Nick Monroe, took the elevator back down to the lobby. We met Thomas, thanked him for accidently letting us visit Nick, and returned to our car.
When we got home we were excited. Beth and I called up KWOD when Capone came on that night. We asked him if he had gotten our letters. He said he had and thanked us. Capone then put us on hold for a bit. When he got back to us he asked us it we could talk well at the same time. We said we supposed we could. THen he asked us to say "Capone, you're a pig" We did. He recorded us. And acouple times that evening he played it!
The day we met Nick Monroe was one of the coolest days of our lives. Thanks!
