Speedball
 |
Okay, ready for the low-down on Speedball? His real name is Robert (Robbie) Baldwin. I'm not too sure, but I think he was created in the middle to late 80's. He was solo then, and his comic was..well, terrible. Anyway, superheroes gets all the chicks, so Robbie decided to join the New Warriors. Great, grand, wonderful. There was always eluding to the true nature of Robbie's powers, but it wasn't really tuched upon for a long time. I read somewhere that after issue 50, Fabian Neciza was planning on this huge Speedball story, but that never happened. So, we find out roughly 20 issues later that Speedball from before issue 50 and the Speedball after issue 50 are two different people. Geez, Marvel sure knows how to drive a plot into the ground...Namorita is a clone of her mother--Speedball was replaced for 2 years by a clone--and we won't even get into the mess they made on that whole spider-clone nonsense. Anyway, during the Speedball clone madness, the character of Timeslip was introduced. She turned out to be one of my favorite characters to date. Trying to save Robbie's life, all she managed to do was feak him out. Anyway, on the moon, battling a dreaded dire wrath, Timeslip proved herself to everyone by destroying this bad-guy laser-thing and sacrificing her powers (temporarily or forever, we don't know...). Anyway, by issue 75, the last issue of New Warriors, Timeslip, or more simply Rina, and Robbie seemed to be maybe starting what might one day be a relationship.
