The following is a description of how this Chito Ryu kata is performed at Grand River Karate and should not be taken as describing all relevant details in the kata. Your sensei will instruct you in the finer points.

N.B. The compass directions relate to "North" as being the direction faced when starting the kata.

  1. Begin with the standard Chito Ryu kiba dachi ("horse" or straddle stance) opening.
  2. Shift your weight to the right foot and move into hidari neko ashi dachi (left cat stance) facing North.
  3. Chamber both hands over the left hip, right fist over left fist, then perform a right crescent kick, jumping forward and landing in gyaku kosa dachi (reverse crossed-leg stance, left leg behind right). Strike as you land with migi jodan uraken (right high backfist) to your target's face and a horizontal hidari nukite uchi (left knife hand strike) to the target's eyes. Kiai.
  4. Turn 90 degrees counter-clockwise to face West and step back with your left leg into kiba dachi. Strike to your target's throat with a double open-handed age shuto uke (palms facing you) . Keep your elbows in and separate your opponent's grab with a double open-hand hook block.
  5. Turn counter-clockwise to face South, blocking with migi gedan shuto (right low open-hand block) by your left hip. Strike with hidari tate yonhon nukite (left four-finger spear hand) to your target's throat while the right hand does chudan osae uke (middle press block) under the left arm.
  6. Turn clockwise to face North and block with hidari gedan shuto by your left hip. Strike with migi tate yonhon nukite (right four-finger spear hand) to your target's throat while the left hand does chudan osae uke (middle press block) under the right arm.
  7. Turn counter-clockwise to face West again, still holding the kiba dachi from step 4. Leave your left hand in place and bring the right hand back to block under the left arm.
  8. Turn counter-clockwise, pivoting on your left foot to face East in kiba dachi. Strike to the South with migi haito uchi (right ridge-hand strike) to your target's temple.
  9. Turn your head and strike to the East with migi shuto uchi (right sword-hand strike) to your target's temple.
  10. Do migi nami gaeshi (right "returning wave" kick) and pivot counter-clockwise 90 degrees on the left foot to land in kiba dachi, facing North.
  11. Block with migi gedan shuto by your left hip. Face West and strike with hidari tate yonhon nukite to your target's throat while the right hand does chudan osae uke under the left arm.
  12. Turn clockwise to face East and block with hidari gedan shuto by your left hip. Strike with migi tate yonhon nukite to your target's throat while the left hand does chudan osae uke under the right arm.
  13. Reach out to the right, grab (your opponent's right arm) with both hands and pull your opponent down and across your body as you sink lower in kiba dachi.
  14. Hold your opponent's wrist in your left hand, chamber your right and break your opponent's elbow with hidari nami gaeshi (left "returning-wave" kick). Land in a very low front stance facing Northwest and punch down with your right fist.
  15. Perform a right scoop hooking block (trapping another opponent's punch). Raise your body by raising your right heel, then drop your heel and body to snap your opponent's arm.
  16. Step up to your left foot in renoji dachi ("L" stance), facing North.
  17. Step forward into hidari kokutsu dachi (left back stance) and do migi gedan berai (right low sweeping block).
  18. Step forward into migi kokutsu dachi (right back stance) and do hidari gedan berai (left low sweeping block).
  19. Shift into hidari zenkutsu dachi (left front stance), reach forward and grab your opponent's head with both hands. Strike with migi hiza uchi (right knee strike).
  20. Turn 180 degrees counter-clockwise to the South as you step down into hidari zenkutsu dachi. Strike with hidari shuto uchi.
  21. Step forward into migi zenkutsu dachi. Strike with migi shuto uchi.
  22. Bring the right foot back, then lunge forward into migi zenkutsu dachi, striking with morote tettsui uchi (double hammerfist strike) to your opponent's ribs. Immediately shuffle forward into kiba dachi, facing East, and punch with chudan yoko zuki (middle side punch).
  23. Turn your head sharply to face North, shifting your feet to migi kokutsu dachi. Cover with both hands, then block to the front with hidari gedan berai and to the rear with migi ushiro jodan uchi uke (right rear high inside block).
  24. Execute migi nami gaeshi, pivoting 90 degrees counter-clockwise on the left foot. Land facing West in kiba dachi and do morote yoko gedan berai (double low side sweeping block).
  25. Perform yami zuki ("bow-and-arrow" punch) to the South. Turn your left hand (with dynamic tension) into haishu uke (back open-hand block).
  26. Kick with migi mikazuke geri (right crescent kick), slapping your left hand. Land in kiba dachi, striking with migi hira empi (right horizontal elbow strike) to your left hand. Shift immediately to migi zenkutsu dachi. Keeping your hand in place, block with migi chudan uchi uke.
  27. Turn your left hand over into hidari chudan osae uke (left middle press block) and using dynamic tension, block with migi gedan berai.
  28. Step back with your right foot, then step forward again into migi zenkutsu dachi, pushing forward with a slow chudan heiko zuki (middle parallel double punch).
  29. Step back with your right foot, then step forward diagonally (to the Southeast) with your left foot into hidari zenkutsu dachi, again pushing forward with a slow chudan heiko zuki.
  30. Step back again, then step forward diagonally (to the Southwest) with your right foot into migi zenkutsu dachi, again pushing forward with a slow chudan heiko zuki.
  31. Chamber your left hand and turn counter-clockwise 270 degrees (to the Northwest) into hidari zenkutsu dachi, blocking with a right hooking block.
  32. Turn clockwise 90 degrees (to the Northeast) and block with a left hooking block.
  33. Step up to the right foot with hidari neko ashi dachi, facing East, and bring the hands forward from the right hip, left over right, to an open-hand, arched wrist, palm-down position about shoulder height.
  34. Turn 180 degrees counter-clockwise (to the West) in the same stance, again bringing the hands forward from the right hip, left over right.
  35. Step diagonally Northwest into migi neko ashi dachi and bring the hands forward from the left hip, right over left.
  36. Turn 135 degrees counter-clockwise (to the East) in the same stance, again bringing the hands forward from the left hip, right over left.
  37. Turn to face North in heisoku dachi (informal attention stance). Close.
