Teikyoko Sandan

This Chito Ryu kata is performed at Grand River Karate and is not the same as the Shotokan Teikyoko Sandan. The following should not be taken as describing all relevant details in the kata. Your sensei will instruct you in the finer points.

N.B. The compass directions relate to "North" as being the direction faced when starting the kata.

  1. Perform the standard Chito Ryu kata opening, ending in kiba dachi ("horse" or straddle stance).
  2. Bring the left foot in, immediately sliding out again into migi kokutsu dachi (right back stance), facing West and blocking with hidari uchi uke (left inside middle block).
  3. Bring the left foot back and shift (very briefly) into migi zenkutsu dachi (right front stance), turning into kiba dachi facing Northwest, simultaneously executing a cross-body punch to the West.
  4. Perform hidari nami gaeshi (left "returning wave" kick) to return to your original kiba dachi and execute hidari gedan berai (left low block).
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 to the right side, transposing sides and direction. End facing North.
  6. Step forward into hidari zenkutsu dachi (left front stance) while performing hidari jodan uke (left high block) and chambering the right fist.
  7. Step forward into migi zenkutsu dachi while performing migi jodan uke (right high block), leaving the high block in place.
  8. Execute gedan ke oroshi geri (left low kick) to your target's knee, stepping through after the kick into hidari zenkutsu dachi and punching with hidari chudan tate tsuki (left middle vertical half-turn punch). Bring the right fist back to chambered position.
  9. Follow the punch with hidari empi uchi (left elbow strike) to the target's head. (This also has the effect of punching over your left shoulder.)
  10. Bring your left fist over your head and down into hidari gedan berai, followed by migi jodan gyaku zuki (right high reverse punch).
  11. Bring your right foot forward beside your left, turning clockwise, facing East, with your left hand (very briefly) chambered and your right in shuto block beside your left ear. [Migi sho kata ue nagashi uke]
  12. Take a "hop step" sideways to the South, using the left hand as hikite (pulling hand) and executing migi shuto uchi (right open-hand strike) to your target's temple as you land, feet together.
  13. Shift into migi zenkutsu dachi facing South by moving your right foot diagonally. Use your left hand as a pushing hand and your right as hikite, chambering it briefly in shuto on the right hip before striking to the front of your target's throat with migi keito uchi (right "chicken head" strike, striking with the angle formed by the thumb and first knuckle).
  14. Step forward into hidari zenkutsu dachi while performing hidari jodan uke. Leave the block in place.
  15. Perform steps 8 - 13, transposing sides and direction. End facing North in hidari zenkutsu dachi (left front stance).
  16. Bring the right hand up under the left (trapping your opponent's wrist). Pull your opponent by stepping back with your left foot into migi zenkutsu dachi, ending with a double elbow strike to the rear.
  17. Perform two yama tsuki (a double "U" punch), the first, right hand high, left low, the second, left hand high, right low.
  18. Bring your left foot up beside your right foot and step back with the right into hidari zenkutsu dachi.
  19. Perform step 16-18, transposing hands.
  20. Step up into shizen tai (natural stance) and perform the normal Chito Ryu kata closing.
