A Little Background

Seven young alien scientists stranded on the moon die of a strange plague...and are reborn in present-day Japan, destined to meet again. This is the basis of one of the best shoujo (women's/girl's) manga ever to make it to animation, "Please Save My Earth." Originally drawn by Saki Hiwatari, PSME contains enough emotion, intrigue and drama to ensnare even a jaded anime fan. When a small group of high school students tell of similar dreams, events and people are pieced together, and each reborn person must face his or her past identity, and for one, atone for what they've done in their past life.

Along with excellent animation, character design and direction, the soundtrack is a stunning mix of vocal tracks and new-age sounding background music. (The closing theme in particular is heartachingly beautiful.) "Please Save My Earth" has one flaw, and that is a rushed ending that leaves one wanting more to follow. The six episodes of this series were combined with some new material concerning Alice and Rin's destinies to form a feature-length movie in Japan, however. In the meantime, fans must make do with the three-tape series available from Viz Video. Here's hoping more companies will follow Viz's lead and translate more shoujo-style anime of this high caliber.

PSME Manga

Ureshii! I found volumes 2 and 12 of the Please Save My Earth comics at the Japanese bookstore I frequent! I could follow the story almost perfectly in number 2, and I've scanned a page or two for your perusal. But by number 12 (which seems to come directly after where the anime version ends), I was fairly confused. Rin's still in the hospital, and apparently he tells Alice something quite disturbing. Also there's scenes of Shion and a child on the moonbase presumably after everyone else died. I confess my ignorance on who the child is, though.

Anyway, here are the covers of numbers 2 and 12 below, click for larger versions.

You'll never mistake me for Ms. Hiwatari, but here's a few renditions of our favorite characters I've drawn. Click on 'em.
