The Art of the Duel

by Kai, Grand Master Martial Arts Instructor

Editor's Note: The third type of battle is the duel. This is a special, one-on-one battle between two characters. The battle itself is very neat and fun to watch, with cool animations, sound and scaling effects. Like the war scenes, all you do is plunk in your command for the round then sit back and watch the results. There are three duels that take place during the game. Unfortunately it isn't even mentioned in the instruction booklet.

Greetings, young fighter. I am Kai, Master Martial Arts Instructor of the Scarlet Moon Empire. Here I have written the basics of an ancient and honored form of combat -- the duel. In the duel two warriors meet in the field of combat. It is here that the true skill and abilities of both fighters are seen. Runes and Magicks are of no use here. Only a fighter's strength, wits, and battle savy will help him see victory. So read on, and remember what you learn. It may be the difference between victory and defeat -- and life and death....

As I have said, Runes and Magicks are of no use in the duel. Damage and defense are based on the character's attack power and defense, just as it is in a normal party vs. party battle. Armor and weapon strength will still affect these statistics.

You will have three options open to you: attack, desperate attack, and defend. Attack is your normal attack; use it when you think your opponent is going to defend. In a desperate attack you focus your attention solely on delivering a powerful and critical blow; use it when you think your opponent is going to attack. You will recieve normal damage from them, but they will suffer double your normal damage from you. When you defend, you place your guard up to parry your opponent's attack and reduce damage. If it is done against an attack, you only suffer half of the normal damage. However, if it is done against a desperate attack, you recieve no damage and counter their attack, dealing them double damage.

So simply remember:

Many a young fighter, arrogent and flush with pride, rushes headlong into battle without thinking or studying their opponent. Doing thid is fine by me -- if you want to lose. Much can be learned from your opponent's words and manner. Specifically, you can learn what their next move is going to be, so don't ignore their messages and skip past them.

Always remember that strength alone will not bear the fruits of victory -- it is the smart fighter who will win the day. Study your opponent carefully, make the right choices and even the most impossible and powerful of foes can be conqured. If you lose, don't despair. It may be that you are not yet strong enough. Go out and adventure more and gain experience. Improve your armor and equipment. Then return and challange your foe again. I hope that my words will aid you. Good luck, young fighter!

SPOILER ALERT!

The second duel between Pahn and Teo is set up so that you WILL lose. However, if you are at a high enough level and you make the right choices, you can win and Pahn will live. I had him at about level 35 or 36 and fully equipped, and made it out by the seat of my pants. Just make sure you equip him with good armor and upgrade his weapon before the duel.
