The Theory of War
by Mathiu Silverburg, Chief Medical Officer and Tactician of the Liberation Army
For much of my life I was a strategist in the Imperial Army. However, on the dark day of the Kalekka Incident I saw the true horror of war. Thousands of men, both friends and enemies alike, died as a result of plans and strategems of my divising. Sickened, I left the army and the senseless slaughter of war and swore a life of peace. However I was destined to return to my role as strategist to aid the fledgling Liberation Army. It is a painful choice to make, but I must. The future of this country, this land, this world, hangs in the balence. If peace is ever to return Barbarosa and his cruel regime must fall. Each commander must know the strenghts and weaknesses of the soldiers under their command if victory is to be achieved. So read on, and learn the theory of war.
In the battle, you will be presented with four strategy options: Charge, Bow, Magic, and Others. Major battles are fairly simple, like a game of Jun Ken Po. Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock. Likewise
- Magic beats Charge,
- Charge beats Bow (sort of),
- and Bow beats Magic.
You select a strategy and group (discussed later) with which to attack. The Imperial Army’s plan is displayed, and a simple animation of the attacks (which are actually kind of funny, especially the Fire Spears =) and their results follow. This pattern is repeated until one side’s troop strength reaches zero. If the Imperial Army reaches zero first, you win. If the Liberation Army reaches zero, you lose and must restart from your last save.
The characters you have recruited will be divided into predetermined battalion command groups. Each consists of up to three characters: 1 commander and 2 aides. They will command a certain number and type of troops. You select a command group to use for the turn. Once a group has been used, they can not be used again for the rest of the battle. Some groups might be missing characters who haven’t joined yet or have fallen in battle. The attack strength of these groups will be lowered. The more characters you have, the stronger your force and troop strength will be.
Here is a list of the completed command parties of the Liberation Army (All 108 characters recruited):
Charge
- Straight forward charge. Good against Bow attacks, beaten by Magic.
- Knight’s Party -- Maxamillian, Sancho, and Qlon: 30
- Lepant Family -- Lepant, Eileen, and Sheena: 26
- Commander’s Party -- Hero, Pahn, and Gremio: 26
- Old Soldiers -- Kai, Liukan, and Fukien: 24
- Wild Geese -- Kreutz, Morgan, and Kirke: 24
- Humphrey’s Team -- Humphrey, Alen, and Grenseal: 24
- Viktor’s Team -- Viktor, Warren, and Taggart: 23
- Pirates -- Anji, Leonardo, and Kanak: 23
- Former Imperial Team -- Kasim, Griffith, and Valeria: 22
- Fellows -- Blackman, Zen, and Ivanov: 21
- Invulnerable Defense -- Kwanda, Eikei, and Gaspar: 21
- Bandits -- Varkas, Sydonia, and Kessler: 21
- Fishermens -- Tai Ho, Yam Koo, and Kimberly: 19
- Warriors' Village Kids -- Flik, Tengaar, and Hix: 17
- Good Buddies -- Marie, Onil, and Sansuke: 16
- Black Golds -- Maas, meese, and Moose: 15
- Carpenters -- Gen, Kamandohl, and Tesla: 14
- Secret Factory Team -- Mose, Ronnie, and Sarah: 14
- Kobolds -- Fu Su Lu, Kuromimi, and Gon: 13
- Tricksters -- Juppo, Jabba, and Meg: 6
Bow
- Attack with bows. Beats magic attacks completely. Beaten by Charge attack (but you still deal some damage in).
- Forest Protectors -- Kirkis, Sylvina, and Stallion: 21
- Experts -- Clive, Pesmerga, and Mace (without Clive they are Charge): 19
- Adventurers -- Lorelai, Quincy, and Mina: 17
- Cooks -- Antonio, Lester, and Rock: 14
- Engineers Sergei, Hugo, and Templeton: 12
- Archers -- Rubi, Georges, and Marco: 8
Magic
- Attack with magic. Beats Charge completely. Beaten by Bow attack.
- Children of the Runes -- Crowley, Luc, and Lotte: 25
- Magicians -- Jeane, Hellion, and Viki: 20
- Soldier Beauties -- Sonya, Cleo, and Camille (without Sonya they are Bow): 20
- Narcissists -- Milich, Vincent, and Esmeralda: 18
- Musicians -- Kasios, Melodye, and Window: 14
Others
- Dragon Knights -- Joshua, Milia, and Futch: Dragon attack, good against Magic (=25), o.k. against Charge, loses to Bow. Use early on if possible, because the damage done seems to be proportional to the enemy’s troop strength,
- Merchants -- Kun To, Chapman, and Chandler: Make the enemy turn traitor
- Ninjas -- Kage, Kasumi, and Fuma: Learn the enemy’s next plan, always works
- Thieves -- Krin, Ledon, Giovanni: Learn the enemy’s next plan, fails sometimes (Note: the Ninja and Thief options can both be used multiple times -- once for each member. These are the only groups that are used this way. Use them every turn to out plan your enemy.)
- Strategists -- Mathiu, Leon, and Apple: Boosts the attack power of the next 3(?) Charge attacks by 50%
In the heat of battle many lives are lost. Even the 108 Stars of Destiny may fall. (If this happens, the character will give a brief dying speech and Mathiu will give a casualty report. Also, the character’s name on the Stone Tablet will turn black. I hope that helps. I didn’t know this at first and after major battles I would run around my castle making sure that everyone was still there =P). It is for our fallen friends that we fight. We must honor their memories and achieve the free world that they dreamed of....
