![]() The story introduces us to the main characters, a 4th grader named Kinomoto Sakura and her best friend Daidouji Tomoyo. Not forgetting to mention another character, a cute stuffed-toy lookalike, Osaka-dialect speaking creature called Keroberos (shortened to Kero-chan much to his dismay). Some more characters are thrown in, like Sakura's father, her older brother Touya and his best friend who happens to be Sakura?s big crush -- Yukito. Sakura's task is to capture the Clow cards, a set of cards which she accidentally released after a misadventure in her father's library.Finding an old book lying around in the basement, curiosity got the better of her. She opened up the Clow book and swoosh -- the cards stored inside flew out and disappeared in a nanosecond. And coming out from the Clow book is none other than the guardian of the Clow, Kero-chan, angry because 1) his sleep was disturbed and 2) where had all the cards gone to?! The Clow cards were created by a powerful magician, Clow Read. They possess great powers and if not captured soon, great calamities await the world! And hence the Card Captor is born. Sakura catches the cards, Tomoyo designs the cool clothes Sakura got to wear everytime she's in action (What? A cardcaptor has to wear the same clothes twice?! How unthinkable!) and Kero-chan is the moral supporter. Things seem to be going pretty smooth for Sakura until another card captor arrives from Hong Kong, a boy named Li Syaoran -- do we sense some competition here! There are also comedic moments as both Sakura and Syaoran compete for Yukito's affection and for the Clow cards. However very soon there are hints of the cutest romance blossoming between them, and Syaoran's too-cute blush whenever Sakura is around became sort of a trademark of the story. As the story progressed, there are more characters introduced, more questions to be answered, more mysteries to reveal. Like, for instance, what is the relation between Sakura's father and Clow Read? Why are Sakura and Syaoran both attracted to Yukito? What about Touya's ex-girlfriend, Mizuki-sensei? And who is this seemingly evil boy Eriol, coming all the way from England with his gender-confused, Touya-clinging companion Nakuru and Kero-chan's 'separated-at-birth twin' Spinel? Suddenly Sakura's world is not all that simple anymore as she must battle more and more powerful villains to become the 'Mistress of the Clow'. Card Captor Sakura is a story with a light plot but the details are quite complex (e.g the Clow cards) and there are little sub-plots abound, like the relationships of Touya and Yukito, Touya and Mizuki-sensei, funnyman Yamazaki and Chiharu, Rika and Terada-sensei, etc. The artwork is beautiful, the innocence of the characters is really touching, and the use of humor is great as usual. Another winning story from the highly creative CLAMP. Y.W © 1997 - 2001 last updated 26/01/2001 natane@oocities.com |
