Bishonen: Nuriko
Anime/manga: Fushigi Yuugi aka FY (to those of you foolish mortals who for some reason cannot pronounce Fushigi Yuugi, that's Mysterious Play, all riiiight?)
Merits: Ahm... s/he's so strong!
The Lowdown: All righty! I've kept him/her out of YGIA so long, it's time I gave an explanation. I've only read a few volumes of the FY manga, so my information is pretty totally based on the anime version.
At first, Nuriko seemed the perfect candidate for induction into my happy little archive. You see, he was a constant cross dresser- in fact, I had no idea he was a... he... until the ever-so-revealing episode involving Japanese fans and a hot spring. Plus this, he was very definetely homosexual, following the beautiful emperor Hotohori with declarations of love.
It was rather sad and pathetic- this pretty transvestite chasing after a rather unattractive soverign *ducks bricks* I know lots of you are in love with Hotohori- I guess it can't be helped ^_^
I became pretty upset with the entire show/Yuu Wasate when Nuriko told his story of how he'd lost his sister and decided to become just like her (explaning the reason of his cross-dressing, of course) and declared that he'd renounce this "dress-up game." This made me rather upset- it seemed like the fact that he's happier as a woman needed to be apologized for. It just rubbed me the wrong way for a long time, and I decided that if FY didn't want to portray him as a flaming homosexual proudly, they shouldn't portray her as one at all
Well... in the end I changed my mind. (obviously, because here she is.)As long as we're going spoiler mad, I suppose I'll elaborate. In his death, they buried her- and couldn't really decide which pronoun to use. Did he want to be called a woman, or a man? That sort of thing is really better left ambigious, they decided, much like he was.
There's also the matter of the good emperor's wife. She bore a stricking resemblance to the good senshi- even the characters remarked. It was said that Nuriko wanted him to be happy- apparently just as long as he was happy with a Nuriko look-alike. ^_^. Am I making any sense? I'm just saying that... well, Nuriko was gay. He was fun. When he died he went all pastel and continued to be fun. He may have renounced his cross-dressing ways, but that doesn't make her any less worthy of induction. Let's all give a kudos to Nuriko! *dance dance*
