Floor Paintings
Floor decoration to narrate sequences of mythology is one of India's traditional paintings. The Chola rulers in the south, made extensive use of floor designs. These decorations were done only by women and were very expressive. The art of floor designing is referred by different names in different parts of the country. Some of them are
alpana
in Bengal and Assam,
aripana
in Bihar,
mandana
in Rajastban,
rangoli
in Gujarat and Maharashtra,
cbowkpurana
in Uttar Pradesh and
kolam
in the South.
Miniature Paintings
Earlier, in most cases the court and royal scenes were the subject of the miniature paintings from the various regions. These paintings were dresses of ladies in various patterns, wonderfully colored turbans of men. Vegetable dyes were used in all the forms of miniature paintings.
The miniature paintings of the Mughal period depict the events and lifestyle of the Mughals in their magnificent palaces. Portraits of wildlife and plants were also drawn. Miniature Paintings are still popular in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
