Pan-Hellenic Council

University of Maryland, College Park
   Recognizing the need for unity and coordination of activities of inter-collegiate predominantly Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities, these organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.,  Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. constitute the Pan-Hellenic Council (PHC) at UMCP.   In addition, we have affiliate member organizations which are Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc.,  and Sigma Lambda Upsilon Sorority, Inc. that also partake in Pan-hellenic activities at our school.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard University.  It is a sisterhood composed of women who have consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of self-fulfillment through volunteer service. Alpha Kappa Alpha  Sorority cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards, promotes unity and friendship among college women, alleviates problems concerning girls and women and maintains a progressive interest in college life.

   On September 19, 1963, at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University), 12 students founded Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.  Our purpose is to increase the development and perpetuation of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity, and brotherhood among men. Our motto reflect sthat we are "Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One!"
     The Nu Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc was founded in August 1971 at the University of Maryland in  College Park, Maryland. From its inception, Nu Chapter was a trail blazer on the Maryland campus and in the Fraternity, and has made significant contributions to the growth and development of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 13, 1913 on
at Howard University by twenty-two illustrious women.  These collegiate
women used their collective strength to promote academic excellence
and community involvement.  Delta Sigma Theta not only serves the campus community but continues its quest to advocate social justice and political activism in the African American community.  Delta Sigma Theta is now the largest sorority in the country and proudly stands on its principles of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service.The Kappa Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered on January 26, 1974 by Eleven from Heaven.

Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded at Kean University in Union New Jersey, in 1975.  Our main purpose is to create a support group for women of color in a predominantly white society. Its focus was to integrate into the social, political, and community service arena that other students had been involved with.

Upsilon Chapter
Sigma Lambda Upsilon Sorority, Inc. were founded nationally on December 20, 1987 at Binghamton University in New York. Upsilon Chapter was founded on April 22, 2000. Sigma Lambda Upsilon/ Senoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. (SLU) exists to bring together women committed to the politial and social advancement of under represented populations. Although SLU is Latina-based, we are not Latina- exclusive, and our sisterhood is open to all women who share the desire to uplift the community.
